Engineering Students' Cable Guide

The document discusses high capacity cables and conductors. It defines high capacity conductors (HCC) as modern, high-speed, high-efficiency cables that can carry greater power than traditional cables. HCC cables are well-suited for areas with high power demands or that require long-distance transmission like coastal regions. The document provides details on the construction, installation, testing and use of different types of high voltage cables including their components, materials, and termination processes.

High Capacity Cables and Conductors

Fig 1. HCC (High Capacity Conductor)

A high-voltage cable (HV cable) is a high-voltage cable used to transmit electricity.

Different types of high-voltage cables operate for various applications. For instrument control,
alternating current (AC), direct current (DC) and ignition systems, many of these are essential. The
purpose behind providing a high voltage power power cable cable network is to avoid any contact
between certain objects or living beings with a high voltage conductor and when there is a rise in
high voltage due to ozone-generated electrical discharges in the environment, the isolation of a
high-voltage power cable must be monitored.

HCC or High Capacity Conductors are modern high-speed, high-efficiency cables where
greater power supply is required compared to ACSR. Such cables offer a solution for increased
power demand and high capacity data transmission by using modern materials and technologies.
HCC is the best solution for a variety of conditions, such as coastal, salty areas and long-range
transmission sections.

Characteristics of High Capacity Cables and Conductors

1. The size of the conductors (cross-section area) is specified in square millimeters and
kcmil, having a diameter of 1/1000 in, where a Cmil is the cross-section area of a circular
conductor with a diameter of 1/1000 in.

2. Approximate current carrying capacity of conductors considering 60 Hz, wind movement

1.4 miles / h, conductor temperature is 75 degrees centigrade and 25 degrees centigrade
respectively.
3. Typical values of resistance, inductive reactance and capacitance reactance per unit
length of Aluminum Cable Steel Reinforced (ACSR) conductors

Construction Of High Voltage Voltage Power Cables

1. Both power and illumination cables shall be aluminum conductors, coated, secured, and
sheathed with PVC. The insulation standard shall be 1100 V. Copper conductor control
cable, PVC isolated, shielded and 1.1 KV PVC sheathed.

2. Multi strand, copper conductors, PVC separated from 1.1 shall be wiring cables for
lighting. Class KV.

3. The HT cables shall consist of aluminum conductors, XLPE insulated and armored or as
stated in the Bill of Quantities.

Installation, Testing And Commissioning Of Cables

1. Before commencing the installation work, cable routes shall be established.

2. After uniform section trenches are digged, all cables to be buried in the ground must be
done. The cables shall be laid between adjacent cables with appropriate spacings (side
by side). The cables are then coated with tiles or bricks, and eventually with sand and soil
back-fillings.
3. GI Pipes / Hume pipes / PVC pipes, embedded in PCC etc. shall lay cables submerged in
ground and crossing paths, highways, streets.
4. Cables run through prepared trenches or structures, and suitably clamped and cleaned
walls. The clamp spacing will depend on the size of the cables. The cables must be
secured against mechanical damage when crossing floors etc. The saddles and spacers
are to be of GI. The clamping and cleating process shall be addressed and accepted with
Architects / Owners.

5. Before starting the work, the use of cable trays, racks or direct clamping shall be decided
and the same shall be authorized.

Termination Of Power Cables

1. All HV cable terminations shall be affected with conical heavy duty brass glands. The
armour shall be bonded and securely clamped. The terminations shall be carried out with
cable sockets, Raychem type jointing kits. There should not be any strain on the cable.
2. The LV cable terminations shall be soldered or crimped on to cable sockets. In case of
soldering, the solder and flux shall be of high quality. The terminations to the equipment
shall be carried out with brass compression glands.
3. After terminations, the individual phase conductors shall be tapped with coloured tapes
for identifications.
4. The HV/LV cable of terminations shall be pressure tested in the presence of authorities,
before commissioning.
