Tutorial 1 Scflow: Extract Fluid Region - Create A Lid

The document provides instructions for setting up and running a fluid flow and heat transfer analysis using scFLOW software. It describes how to extract the fluid domain, set boundary conditions including inlet velocities and temperatures, generate a mesh, execute the analysis, monitor convergence, and visualize results including temperature contours on cut planes. The key steps are preparing the analysis model from CAD parts, setting inlet/outlet boundary conditions, generating a mesh, running the solver to solution, and using the postprocessor to view temperature contour plots.

Extract fluid region - Create a lid

 Since the heat transfer of solid is not analyzed in this training, the fluid region enclosed by solid parts is
extracted. Firstly, create the lids of inlet/outlet to recognize the internal space so that the fluid region can be
extracted.
 Click [Prepare Parts]-[Modify Parts] in Navigation and open the [Modify Parts] dialog.
 Select [Create Cover] in [Cross Section and Extraction] tab and select the three faces shown in the
figure below, which correspond to the inlet/outlet.
 Enter [0.01] for [Thickness of cover] and check both [Overlay] and [Preview].
 Make sure of the lid to be created and click Execute

Extract fluid region - Unite parts

 Next, unite all the parts so that the empty region is recognized and extracted as the fluid region.
 Select [Unite Solids] from the [Edit Solid] tab.
 Select [Selects] - [Select All Parts] in the menu bar.
 Check [Delete original parts] and click Execute.

Extract fluid region - Extract empty region
 Next, extract the empty region.
 Select [Extract Empty Regions of solid] in the [Cross Section and Extraction] tab.
 Select the united parts in Part Tree and click Execute. The empty region is extracted and the
part [Extracted0] is created.

 Enter [0.5] for [Thickness] and check both [Overlay] and [Preview].

 Make sure of the extended regions and click Execute.
 Modify the name of the extracted empty region.
 Select the part [Extracted0] in Part Tree.
 Click [...] next to [Part name] in Property.
 Enter [Domain] for [New name] and click OK.

Build Analysis Model

 After preparation of parts has been completed, execute a conversion of the CAD data to assembly of
triangle patches for creating mesh.
 Click [Build Analysis Model] in Navigation and click OK in the displayed dialog. The color of the parts
changes from green to blue. This means that the CAD data defined on a function basis has been converted
to the analysis model which is the assembly of triangle patches.
(Note) From the operation hereon, if [Return to Prepare Parts] is clicked during the operation, the data will return
to the CAD data, and the registrations of face and volume regions will be cleared.

Analysis type
 Click [Conditions] in Navigation Window to show Condition Wizard.
 In Condition Wizard, the settings necessary for the analysis are listed in the left pane. Click Next to
move to the item below in the tree. In addition, click each item in the tree to directly move to the setting item.
 In [Analysis Type], select basic functions used for the analysis. The items in Condition Wizard alter
according to the items selected in this dialog.
 Since flow and temperature are solved in this tutorial, check [Heat]. Then, click Next.
Basic Setting
 In [Basic Setting], make basic settings related to an analysis.
 Make sure that [Steady-state analysis] is selected, [400] is entered for [Last cycle], and [20] is
entered for [Default temperature]. Click Next.

Initial condition
 In [Initial Condition], set the initial value of each physical quantity when the calculation start.
 If no condition is specified, the entire region is initialized with the default temperature and zero is set for
the other parameters.
 Since nothing needs to be set for [Initial Condition] in this tutorial, just click Next.
Flow Boundary
 Select [inlet1] in the list of region names and click [Inflow and outflow condition] in [New condition].

 Ensure that [Normal velocity] is selected for [Type].

 Enter [1][m/s] for [Vertical velocity].
 Ensure that [Default temperature(20C)] is entered for [Inflow temperature type], and click Set.
 Select [inlet2] in the list of region names and click [Inflow and outflow condition] in [New condition].

 Ensure that [Normal velocity] is selected for [Type].

 Enter [1][m/s] for [Vertical velocity].
 Modify [Inflow temperature type] to [Specify value], enter [80][C], and click Set.
 Select [outlet] in the list of region names and click [Inflow and outflow condition] in [New condition].

Click OK and Execute in the displayed dialog.
 Octree creation and mesh generation are executed and the two files, mesh file (*.gph) and analysis
condition file (*.sph), for Solver are output. Current work status is also stored in a project file (*.pph).
 scFLOWpre presents the following display of mesh generation.
Launch scMonitor
Click scMonitor in the Kicker.

Register job
 Load the SPH file in one of the following two ways.
(1)

 Select [File] - [Open] in the menu bar. Select [SPH file(*.sph)] from the file type and open the SPH file.

(2)

 Drag & drop the SPH file onto scMonitor.

Execute Analysis
 Ensure that the SPH file loaded is registered in Job Scheduler. The [State] of the registered job will
be [Waiting].
 Select the job in the [Waiting] state and click Execute.

 Click Yes in the confirmation dialog.

 Analysis is executed and [Status] in Job Scheduler will be altered to [Running].

Monitor the analysis

 Check the status of the calculation in progress in the Chart View.
(1) Convergence status
 The [Convergence status] shows the variation of each physical quantity from the previous cycle, and
the variations are expected to become small as the field approaches the steady state. The vertical axis
shows the variations in log scale, e.g., -3 means 10-3.
 Solver determines that the calculation has reached the steady state and ends the calculation if the
variations of all the physical quantities go below 10-4. For a steady-state analysis, check this graph first to
see whether the variations are decreasing (graph going down toward the right) with the course of cycles.

KNOW-HOW:

If using a mouse with a wheel, the display items can be altered by rotating the wheel over the tabs of the Chart
View.

(2) Mass flux

 Right click on Chart View and select [Mass Flux].

 It is expected in an incompressible flow analysis that mass flux should always be balanced between
inlets and outlets. In a compressible flow analysis, balance between inlets and outlets is expected for a
steady state. (Practically, the values will not be exactly equal due to the numerical errors.)
 To display the values of the current graph under the legend, right-click on Chart View and click [Show
Current Values]. Check whether the value of Total is small enough and that the mass flux is balanced as
total.
Launch Postprocessor
 Click Postprocessor in the Kicker.

Window layout of Postprocessor

 The window layout of Postprocessor is shown below.

Load analysis result

(1)

 Select [field files (*.fld;*.iFLD;*.fph)] in [File] - [Open Files] to open the FPH file.

Complete Loading
 After the file is loaded completely, the analysis model is displayed in the draw window and the objects
related to the FPH file are displayed in the control window.
 Uncheck [Show Object Names] to hide the object names.

Visualization - Temperature contour plot (Plane)

 Draw a temperature contour plot on a cut plane at Z=0 [m] using [Plane] object.

 After the settings, redraw the draw window by clicking the button of  or by right-clicking the draw
window.
