Production Allocation Utility

Introduction
The Production Allocation Utility is intended for situations where there is a system that
relies on multiple suppliers for inlet feeds, and you want to track the individual supplier
contributions to the resulting products.
In general, the Production Allocation Utility lets you to track the contribution of any
stream(s) to any other stream(s).
Note: The Aspen HYSYS Upstream license is required to run the Production Allocation
Utility.

The Production Allocation Utility provides a way to track how feed sources distribute
throughout the process. This document will demonstrate how the tool works through an
example.

Problem Statement
Three streams (F1, F2, and F3) are overall feeds to the system. Determine the
contribution of these feed streams to the product streams (P1, P2) using the production
allocation utility.
The steps to create Production Allocation Utility are:
1. Add Production Allocation Utility from Home | Analysis | Model Analysis menu.
2. Select feed streams F1, F2, and F3 on the Setup tab
3. On the Report tab, select the product stream for which you want to see the feed
stream contribution.

Figure 1. Stream P1 component allocation

Figure 1 shows that the Production Allocation Utility determined that all of the Methane
in stream P1 came from stream F1. Similarly, all the Nonane in stream P1 came from
stream F2.

Figure 2. Stream P2 component allocation

Figure 2 shows that the Production Allocation Utility determined that 66% of the Nonane
in stream P2 came from stream F3, and only 33% from stream F2.

Solution
Problem: Calculate the mass flow of Nonane in product stream P2 which comes from
feed stream F1.
The production allocation utility sequentially solves the contribution of the feed stream
components to all other streams through simple mass balance equations:

Figure 3. Process Flow Diagram with Component Mass Flows

First, the traditional HYSYS solver converges the flowsheet based on the normal
calculation routines in the software.
Next, based on the results of the flowsheet solve, we can rewrite the mass flow of
Nonane in stream P2 in terms of only the feed mass flows:
lb
ṁP2,nonane = 150
hr
ṁP2,nonane = ṁF3,Nonane + ṁ5,Nonane

From the HYSYS heat and material balance, we can rewrite ṁ5,Nonane as:
ṁ5,Nonane = 50% (ṁ2,Nonane )

Then substitute:
ṁP2,nonane = ṁF3,Nonane + ṁ5,Nonane
ṁP2,nonane = ṁF3,Nonane + 50% (ṁ2Nonane )

Now we rewrite ṁ2,Nonane in terms of streams F1 and F2:

ṁ2,Nonane = ṁF1,Nonane + ṁF2,Nonane

Then substitute back in:

ṁP2,Nonane = ṁF3,Nonane + 50%(ṁF1,Nonane + ṁF2,Nonane )

ṁP2,Nonane = ṁF3,Nonane + 50%(ṁF1,Nonane ) + 50% (ṁF2,Nonane )

Now let’s substitute numbers into this final equation (see Figure 3 above for data):
lb lb lb
ṁP2,Nonane = 100 + 50% (0 ) + 50% (100 )
hr hr hr

lb lb lb
ṁP2,Nonane = 100 + 0 + 50
hr hr hr

F3 F1 F2

We can now determine the mass flow from each feed stream
F3 F1 F2
Nonane in P2 100 lb/hr 0 lb/hr 50 lb/hr

You can see that this matches the results from the Production Allocation Utility:

Other Notes:
• Production Allocation Utility is not designed to work with Black Oil models as
there is not much advantage.
• Black Oil translator is used to translate the information in the composition term,
then the Production Allocation Utility can be used.
