Amendment No. 5 March 2017 TO Is 1239 (Part 1) : 2004 Steel Tubes, Tubulars and Other Wrought Steel Fittings - Specification

This amendment to IS 1239 (Part 1) : 2004 Steel Tubes, Tubulars and Other Wrought Steel Fittings adds a new paragraph explaining differences between the Indian standard and the similar international standard ISO 65. The key differences are: (1) the series covered, thickness, and chemical compositions vary; (2) permissible variation in seamless tube analysis and mechanical properties differ; and (3) negative thickness tolerance and socket fitting requirements are not the same. The differences are due to geographical, technological, and practices specific to India.

AMENDMENT NO. 5 MARCH 2017
TO
IS 1239 (PART 1) : 2004 STEEL TUBES, TUBULARS AND
OTHER WROUGHT STEEL FITTINGS —
SPECIFICATION
PART 1 STEEL TUBES

(Sixth Revision)

(Second cover page, Foreword, Para 6) — Insert the following after sixth
para as a separate para:

‘Provisions in the standard are at variance with similar provisions in

ISO 65 : 1981 ‘Carbon steel tubes suitable for screwing in accordance with ISO
7/1’, in view of the following:

a) Geographical factors which determine the end use;

b) Technological factors associated with the process of manufacture
of the product (such as steel through induction process), which
influence the product characteristics (chemical composition and
mechanical properties like elongation, ductility etc.); and
c) Practices adopted in this country for pipe fittings and laying, the
skill level of workers which also influence the product
characteristics (such as threading, joints, etc).

The major deviations are:

1) The series covered are at variance. Only one Light Series,

equivalent to Light Series 2 of ISO 65, is applicable in this
standard, whereas two light series that is, Light Series 1 and Light
Series 2 are applicable as per ISO 65. Also, thickness of 80 NB
Heavy Series, 125 NB and 150 NB Medium Series vary from that
of ISO 65.
2) Chemical compositions vary from that of ISO 65. The S & P limit
in this standard is lower than that of ISO 65.
3) The permissible variation in case of product analysis of seamless
tubes has been included in this standard whereas it is not part of
ISO 65.

4) Mechanical properties specified in this standard vary from that of

ISO 65.
5) The negative tolerance for thickness varies from that of ISO 65.
6) Socket fitting is at variance. This standard does not permit supply
of screwed tubes without socket whereas ISO 65 permits supply of
screwed tubes without socket.’
