The Long March.: P. S. Sundaresan

The document summarizes the 74 year journey of the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) to improve conditions for bank employees in India. It begins by honoring the founding leaders who faced hostilities from management in the early years. It describes how political and social divisions were used to slow progress but the AIBEA overcame obstacles with diplomacy and unity. The document then lists the names of past leaders who are deceased and those still living to honor their contributions to advancing workers' rights over several decades of the organization's efforts.

THE LONG MARCH.

Seventy four years ago on this day the AIBEA started on its historical memorable journey
to ensure that bank employees in India, eventually reach the place where they now live
and still continue to march for a better destination where in there will be no trace of
exploitation of any worker anywhere.

The journey was unlike today’s travel under LFC by Air or A/C coach, with our dependents
accompanying us. The travel by our founding fathers and former leaders was hard, harsh
and they faced hostile Anti-Labour Management forces, which created hurdles using
weapons like beatings, sudden transfers, summary dismissals etc. Judicial bias, Anti-
labour legislative measures, Executive interference, The Media, were all used to derail
our journey. In later stages communalism and linguistic chauvinism were utilised and
divisive forces surfaced, to slow down our journey. The couplings of coaches in which
we were travelling were uncoupled by political forces, so that a strong and united train
could not reach the terminus. But we again and again re-coupled ourselves and
proceeded onward with diplomacy, patience, tolerance and adjustments as our tools.

Occasionally some anti-social elements instead of pulling the chain, hanging up to stop
the train used to pull the legs of senior passengers. But they themselves used to be
pushed out of the train. Rumors will be afloat that the train has derailed and will not
proceed further. But all these fake news and rumors will get busted and the train will
chug on with greater speed.

Junction after junction we passed on, like the Silver , Gold, Diamond Jubilee Stations and
now , we have reached the outer signal of our Platinum Station.

At this point let us remember and recall the services rendered by the Engine drivers,
Assistants, Guards, Points men, Linemen, TTI’s and all others, who risking their jobs and
discarding their own career progression opportunities and family comforts, ensured that
we the passengers (Bank Employees) continue to travel on.

There were crews by the dozens. All cannot be named. Their services will be never
forgotten. So, on the seventy fourth birthday and commencement of seventy fifth year
of our journey, we publish here in the names of,
