Clock - Important Formulas,Tricks and Examples

Angle traced by hour hand in 12 hrs = 360°.

Angle traced by minute hand in 60 min. = 360°.
In every hour, both the hand coincide once.
In every 12 hours, the hands of clock coincide 11 times.
In a day(24 hours), the hands are coinciding 22 times.
In every hour, the two hands are in opposite direction once.
In every 12 hours, the hands of clock are in opposite direction 11 times.
In every hour, the two hands are at right angles 2 times.
In every 12 hours, the hands of clock are at right angles 22 times.
In a day(24 hours), the two hands are at right angles 44 times.
Clock angle problems
The hour hand of a normal 12-hour analogue clock turns 360° in 12 hours (720 minutes) or 0.5° per minute. The
minute hand rotates through 360° in 60 minutes or 6° per minute.
The angle traced of the hour hand = 0.5 * (60*H + M)°
The angle of the minute hand = 6°*M
The angle between the hands= |Angle of hour hand - Angle of minute hand|
Mirror Image Of Clock
If the time is between 1 to 11 o'clock then to find the mirror image, time is subtracted by 11 : 60
If the time is between 11 to 1 then to find the mirror image, time is subtracted by 23 : 60

An accurate clock shows 8 O’ clock in the morning. Through how many degrees will the hours hand rotate
when the clock shows 2 O’ clock in the afternoon?

A)
144o

B)
150o

C)
168o

D)
180o

Correct Answer :
180o

Explanation :

As given the hour hand going from 8 clock in the morning to 2 clock in the afternoon is equal to 6 hours of passed time.

The clock is a circle.that mean it contains 360 degrees. These 360 degrees are broken down into the 12 hours of the day.
This means there are (360 / 12) = 30 degrees in an hour.
Since 6 hours pass in the question, hence multiply (30 x 6) = 180 degrees

How many times are the hands of a clock at right angles in a day?

A)
22

B)
44

C)
24

D)
48

Correct Answer :
44

Explanation :

In 12 hours, they are at right angles 22 times.

In 24 hours, they are at right angles 44 times.

What will be the angle between the hands of a clock at 3:30 O’clock?

A)
90o

B)
75o

C)
135o

D)
60o

Correct Answer :
75o

Explanation :

The hour hand of a normal 12-hour analogue clock turns 360° in 12 hours (720 minutes) or 0.5° per minute. The minute hand
rotates through 360° in 60 minutes or 6° per minute.
The angle traced of the hour hand = 0.5 * (60*H + M)°
Angle traced by the hour hand in 3 hour = 0.5 * (60*3 + 30)= 105°
The angle of the minute hand = 6°*M
Angle traced by the minute hand in 30 mins = 6°* 30 = 180°
The angle between the hands= |Angle of hour hand - Angle of minute hand|
Required angle, |105 - 180|° = 75°.

A clock is started at 6 O' clock in the morning. Through how many degrees will the hour hand rotate when
the clock shows 11 O' clock in the morning ?

A)
140°

B)
180°

C)
150°

D)
160°

Correct Answer :
150°

Explanation :

From 6 to 11, there are 5 hours.

Angle traced by the hour hand in 6 hours = 5*(360/12) = 150°
Or
The angle traced of the hour hand = 0.5 * (60*H + M)°
Angle traced by the hour hand in 5 hour = 0.5 * (60*5 + 0)= 150°
