THE KING

Elvis Presley was born in East Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8th, 1935.

He died on August 16th, 1977.

For his 11th birthday, his mother, Gladys, gave him a guitar. Elvis
played it every day. He played the music of the church and the
music of the fields. While he was still a child, he won several
singing competitions.

His family was poor and in 1948 they had to move to Memphis,
Tennessee, in search of a better life. In Memphis, his father
Vernon gave him another guitar.

In 1953, Elvis left school and worked as a truck driver and a cinema usher.

One day, in 1953, he went to a Memphis Recording Studio and, for four dollars, made his own
record to give to his mother as a present. The studio manager heard the song and immediately
recognized Elvis’ potential. He invited Elvis to make a record that was a hit. Soon after, Elvis
made a second record and he gave his first concert.

By 1955, Elvis had three songs in the national charts and had signed a contract with Tom
Parker, from RCA Records.

Tom Parker became Elvis’ manager and soon turned him into a world famous rock’n’roll star.

By 1956, he had six gold records. These were the first of the many he won during his life.

Meanwhile, he went to the army in Germany, where he met Priscilla Beaumont.

On May 1st, 1976, Elvis and Priscilla got married.

Elvis died in 1997. He was 42 then and America felt sad. People went to Memphis to say
goodbye to the king of rock’n’roll.
