Application Statement: Danish Bashir

From my school days, I was much fascinated by the phenomenon of vision; the various
phenomenon which occurs due to the light and it was in high school where this fascination
got some scientific view by the introduction of photons there. When I first learned the
construction of a transistor in high school electronics class, I started to develop interests
towards semiconductor electronics, subsequently inclining towards the optical
semiconductors. As I realised, it was due to the close relationship between properties of a
material with the light which blends this together to create a variety of phenomenon. I found
my imagination flows effortlessly to the atomic level and this power of imagination made
those completely new concepts unchallenging for me.

With this desire to delve deeper in this field further, I started to explore various options to
pursue my studies and fortunately, I was successful in qualifying the entrance examination
for Physics undergraduate program at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), India (second best
in the country according to US News, 2016). The exhaustive and exacting nature of the
undergraduate program at the AMU has provided me with a preparative background for
research. I am very confident that my educational and practical background provides a good
foundation for your Master program in the field of Photonics and Optics. From the range of
courses, I have studied in bachelors till now, the courses like electromagnetic waves and
waveguides, Analog system and applications, Fourier optics and Fourier Transform
Spectroscopy, Fibre Optics, Laser physics, electronic devices, processing of devices and
communication systems etc have introduced the photonics. Applied Optics especially
appealed to my interest which becomes my major reason to look for the masters which
involve these fields. The structure of the Masters in photonics at University of Eastern
Finland(UEF) provides a unique combination of innovation and expertise which will be a
stepping stone for my future endeavours. Apart from my physics course, I had Mathematics
and Chemistry as subsidiary subjects. The courses on numerical analysis, advanced calculus
etc made me comfortable with the mathematical aspects of physics. Similarly, Knowledge of
fundamentals of chemistry will have a synergetic effect in working with the multidisciplinary
environments. From this multidisciplinary experience, I obtained necessary skills to plan,
organize and conduct experiments.

Currently, I am in the final semester of my undergraduate program in physics and am doing

my seminar project entitled as ‘Energy Level Structure of Singly Ionized Carbon’. With
diversity in form and shape in carbon, it is unique in nature and the nanostructured carbon-
carbon nanotubes, fullerene etc are very promising and futuristic. Apart from understanding
the unusual properties of carbon, this project will provide me with the insight into the
fundamentals of the spectroscopic characterization of carbon which, then will provide a step
ahead in designing the carbon materials for practical applications. I just want to blend my
willpower with my interest in photonics to do innovations in an eco-friendly manner. Recent
development in the field of biophotonics has captivated my interest most and I see a lot of
potentials for me to engage in research activities in manipulating constant and continuous
energy changes in living part of a cell.

Now I am at an important juncture in my academic career, where I am aspiring to develop

knowledge and skills that would allow me to grow intellectually. Being highly enthusiastic and
active in studies, I think that to achieve my interests the most important thing is to pursue it
in a very supportive environment which caters for the blend of my educational building as
well as definite career trajectory. So, I will be jubilant to be accepted into this unique Master
program of Photonics. University of Eastern Finland(UEF) is based on the principle of
‘Research First’ and its manifestation by producing multidisciplinary and international
approach high-level students. Also, UEF they possess state of the art research labs, student-
friendly environment and the generous scholarship opportunity, which makes it a very
appropriate place for doing research work at par with the leading institutes of the world. So,
given an opportunity in this smartly-designed program with a global academic milieu and a
greater arena for research, I strongly believe that I would be able to enhance my skills
significantly by making the best use of the facilities at my disposal.

Furthermore, I would be very grateful to be considered for a scholarship since I am not able
to finance my studies & accommodation in abroad. I can assure you that I can live up to the
standards of your expectations.

Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to hearing a favourable reply
from you.
