CEA - Measurement and Instrumentation Lab Spring 2020

This document provides information on a Complex Engineering Activity (CEA) for a Measurement and Instrumentation lab course. The CEA involves students forming groups to [1] construct physical models of instruments to measure various physical quantities, [2] take measurements and collect readings using the instruments, and [3] analyze the results and document their findings in a written report. Students will be assessed on their ability to explain instrument working principles, perform measurements, analyze results, demonstrate teamwork, and summarize their work in a report. The activity aims to provide students experience in applying course concepts involving the measurement of physical quantities.

UNIVERSITY OF WAH

WAH ENGINEERING COLLEGE

(Department of Mechanical Engineering)
Course Code: ME-214 Course Title: Measurement and Instrumentation (Lab) Semester: 4th Spring 2020

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

PLO-2: Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research literature and analyze complex engineering
problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering
sciences.
PLO-4: Investigation: An ability to investigate complex engineering problems in a methodical way including literature
survey, design and conduct of experiments, analysis, and interpretation of experimental data, and synthesis of information
to derive valid conclusions.
PLO-9: Individual and Teamwork: An ability to work effectively, as an individual or in a team, on multifaceted and /or
multidisciplinary settings.
PLO-10: Communication: An ability to communicate effectively, orally as well as in writing, on complex engineering
activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective
reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
CLO-1: Explain the construction, working principle and application of different measurement instruments.
CLO-2: Demonstrate the measurement of different physical quantities using respective instrument.
CLO-3: Analyze different measurement methods for physical quantities and/or characteristics of different objects (under
observation).
CLO-5: Demonstrate positive individual and teamwork by contributing actively while performing measurement and
instrumentation lab experiments as well as follow the given instructions and deadlines.
CLO-6: Summarize all the procedures, results and conclusions in the form of written report for each experiment.
Attributes:
Attribute 2: Range of Sources: Involve the use of diverse resources (and for this purpose, resources include people,
money, equipment, materials, information and technologies).
Attribute 3: Level of interaction: Require resolution of significant problems arising from interactions between wide-
ranging or conflicting technical, engineering or other issues.
Attribute 6: Familiarity: Can extend beyond previous experiences by applying principles-based approaches.

Problem statement:
Measurement of different physical quantities, study about various instrumentations to carry out such measurements, and
their control has been playing a vital role in the smooth running of most of the equipment in the industries. This course also
includes the study of working and application of various measurement instruments. This Complex Engineering Activity is
a continuation of the activity given to you in the theory course in which every group must select an appropriate method of
measurement and make a working model as a solution to given set of problems. However, in this lab, each group is
required to modify or build their model in such a way that quantitative readings can be taken as output and analyzed to
further comment on the workability, advantages and limitations of the model.

Each group must answer the following questions while making a physical model for the given problems.
a) Explain the working principle of instrument selected for the given problem. (C-2)
b) Demonstrate the measurement of the physical quantity following a suitable procedure and take at least 5 readings
to show its precision and accuracy. (P-3)
c) Analyze your results by comparing them with the results from other standardized method and theoretical results
(if possible) (C-4)
d) Demonstrate positive teamwork and individualism while performing the experiment in the lab. (A-3)
e) Report all the procedures, readings, analysis and conclusions orally as well as in written report. (C-2)
List of Problems
1. Construct a physical model of an instrument for measuring water level in a jug. (G-1)
2. Construct a physical model of an instrument that can be used to measure the flow rate of water, by pressure
method, from a tap. (G-2)
3. Construct a physical model of an instrument that can measure the height of tall buildings. You will be tasked to
measure the height of ME CAD Lab in Wah Engineering College. (G-3)
4. Construct a physical model of an instrument that can measure the distance. You will be tasked to measure the
distance from the door to opposite wall of CAD Lab. (G-4)
5. Construct a physical model of an instrument that can be used to measure the density of water. (G-5)
6. Construct a physical model of an instrument that can be used to measure the Rpm of a shaft. (G-6)
7. Construct a physical model of an instrument that can be used to measure the velocity of air. (G-7)
8. Conduct an experiment on strain gauges in the mechanics of materials lab and do a study on strain gauges and its
utilization. (G-8)

Requirement from Students

The students are required to adhere to the following guidelines and provide the deliverable(s).
 This CEA is a group task. Students are required to formulate the group consisting of 5 members. The group list
and members’ detail should be provided by Class Representative (CR) by 9th March 2020.
 Each group is required to provide a novel mechanism solely for providing a solution to given problem.
 Each student must submit a report which should contain the following components,
o Abstract of the experiment
o Introduction to instrument setup and its components
o Procedure for measuring the physical quantity using the selected model
o Observations and Calculations related to the measurement of the given physical quantity
o Analysis of the Results and conclude with comments on the suitability, advantages and limitations of the
model
 Students will have to work in a group, but they also need to understand the project on an individual level.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment of the CEA will be according to the rubrics defined particularly for this CEA. There are five CLOs mapped
with this CEA, therefore, marks distribution as under will be followed,
CLO-1 20%
CLO-2 20%
CLO-3 30%
CLO-5 10%
CLO-6 20%

Note: Students whose report have similarity index ≥ 50% will be marked out of 50.
