It examines this relationship through the primary functions of mass communication as outlined by early scholars - surveillance, correlation, and transmission of social heritage. The mass media fulfills the role of watching over society and reporting important events and issues. Throughout history in Nigeria, the mass media has informed citizens and warned of potential dangers from policies, helping shape public opinion. It also serves an entertainment function by sharing stories and customs. ABSTRACT
The paper examines the relationship between mass media and society from the
standpoint of the primary functions of mass communication postulated by pioneer
scholars in communication, Herrold Lasswell and Charles D. Wright. With hindsight
the paper says the mass media can serve both good and bad purposes in the society.
The paper backs up its claim with examples within and outside Nigeria.
