Question 1
The production of formaldehyde (HCHO) is achieved through methane (CH 4) oxidation while avoiding
another parallel oxidation reaction that forms carbon dioxide (CO 2) as shown in Equation 1 below. Both
parallel reactions also produce water as its side product. These reactions take place in a continuous
reactor at steady state and contain an inlet feed stream mixture of 9.0 mol% methane and the balance
air (air consists of 21 mole% O2 and 79 mole% N2). It is determined that the outlet flow rate for nitrogen
gas as 150.0 mol/hr. The percent conversion of the limiting reactant, methane is 70.0%. Selectivity of the
desired product relative to the undesired product is 0.60.
CH 4 + O2 ® HCHO + H 2O
CH 4 + 2O2 ® CO2 + 2H 2O
i. Draw and fully label a process flowchart
(3 marks)
ii. Determine the total feed molar flow rate (in mol/hr).
(3 marks)
iii. Solve the molar composition (in mol%) of the outlet stream mixture.
(19 marks)
Question 2
100 mol/hr of liquid n-hexane at 25C and 1 atm is vaporized and heated to 300C at constant pressure.
i. Construct a complete hypothetical process path to calculate the change of enthalpy (ΔĤ) for the
process above.
(4 marks)
ii. Calculate the change of enthalpy (ΔH) (in kJ/hr) for the process.
(10 marks)
iii. With the aid of a hypothetical process path, determine the change of enthalpy (ΔH) (in kJ/hr) for
the process when the n-hexane vapor at 300°C is subsequently cooled down to n-hexane liquid at
50°C.
(11 marks)
Question 3
Ethylene glycol (HOCH2CH2OH), mainly used as an antifreeze, is produced by reacting 10 lb-mole/h ethylene oxide
with water. A side reaction produces an undesirable dimer, DEG.
Question 4
100 mol/hr of butane (C4H10) are burned in a reactor with 25% excess oxygen (O2), producing CO2, CO
and H2O. The product gases (including C4H10 and O2) enter a separator where 90% of the unreacted
C4H10 and O2 are recycled and mixed with a fresh feed of C4H10 and O2 to form the stream to the reactor.
The rest of the product gases exit as a waste stream. If the single pass conversion of butane is 45% and
there is nine times as much CO2 as CO in the product gas leaving the reactor, determine:
Question 5
A gas mixture containing 85 mole % N2 and the balance n-hexane flows through a pipe at a rate of 100
m3/hr. The pressure is 2.00 atm absolute and the temperature is 100oC.
Question 6
A liquid stream containing mixture of 57.0 mole% benzene (C6H6) and the balance methanol (CH3OH) is
fed into an evaporator at 65˚C. Due to the reduced pressure in the evaporator, a portion of the
mixture evaporates to form vapor. The liquid product contains pure methanol. On the other hand,
the vapor product emerges at a rate of 180.0 mol/s containing 10 mole% methanol and the balance benzene.
Both liquid and vapor product streams are in equilibrium at 45˚C. The flow diagram of the process is
shown below in Figure 1. Neglect the effects of pressure changes on enthalpies.
Using [Benzene (liquid phase, 65˚C), Methanol (liquid phase, 65˚C)] as reference for enthalpy calculations,
fill in the inlet-outlet enthalpy table and determine the required heat input rate in kilowatts (kW).
