Comic Strip Lesson

This lesson teaches 1st grade students about points of view through creating comic strips using PowerPoint. Students will each create their own comic strip showing different points of view of a scenario. They will insert images, text, and record voice narration using PowerPoint. This addresses technology and English language arts standards. The lesson is at the integration level of technology integration as students have choice in their topic and tool used. It utilizes universal design for learning principles through multiple modes of representation.

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☒ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

A PowerPoint presentation (Productivity tool) will be used in this lesson. Students will each have their
assigned laptop and also have my PowerPoint pulled up on their screen. After getting familiar with
PowerPoint presentation they will create their own comic strip using the template provided. Students will
also voice record what their characters are saying in the comic strip. This will allow students to become
familiar with creating a PowerPoint. Along with using texts, images and shapes on their slides. This will
benefit students for many years to come. According to the UDL wheel, this shows representation because
students are viewing the topic with images, texts, and sound.
Lesson idea implementation:
We will start this lesson by briefly talking about point of view and waiting a YouTube video that gives an
overview on it. Next, each student will have their own laptop with my PowerPoint pulled up. I will read the
PowerPoint and also click on the sound so students have these different ways to interpret that topic. I will
then ask students to come up with one section as a whole class. I will talk aloud on how I insert images, texts,
and sound. After, students will create their own comic strip using different points of view. I will walk around
and help out those who are having trouble. Students will then email me their PowerPoint and I will display it
to the class as they present it.
This lesson will take full class time to complete. Presentations will be displayed the following day.
Students will be assessed on how accurate their pronouns are and the creativity used. I will have a rubric for
them to follow so that they can refer to it during class time. To differentiate, lower level students will be given
a list of pronouns that they can look at. As well as, step by step guidelines on how to navigate PowerPoint

presentation. For higher level students they will be asked to make two different comic strips instead of one.
To conclude the lesson, students will not only watch their classmates present but also vote on the best comic
strip that shows creativity.
Reflective Practice: My lesson has multiple tech tools that we used. I believe that students will become
familiar with PowerPoint presentation and be able to use it for years to come. I can extend this lesson by
having students create a story with multiple points of view to share with the class. To further enhance this
project, I could have the students use an animation website to display their story.
