Object:- To find mass transfer co-efficient from sphere of naphthalene to air by using fluidizing bed
with heat turning on the heater
Apparatous:-
1. Fluidizing bed unit.
2. Varnier caliper.
3. Stop watch.
Theory:-
Mass transfer co-efficient is the diffusion rate constant that relates mass transfer rate, mass transfer
area and concentration change as a driving force.
Here we use the dimensionless group numbers to find out the mass transfer co-efficient .
Mass transfer will be indicated by change occur diameter of naphthalenes balls.
Procedure:-
1:- Measure the diameter of napthalenes balls with the help of vernier caliper by using the following
step.
1) Put the naphthalene ball in the lower jous of varnier caliper
2) Note the reading from main scale whose zero of varnier scale concide with main scale
that x=2.1cm
3) Note the reading from main scale where fast seen of varnier scale line up with main
scale that y=2.5cm
4) Dividing this reading “y” with number of division of varnier scale that equal y/10,
2.5/10,0.25
5) Multiply “A” with smallest division on main scale which is 0.1, 0.1*A, 0.1*0.25=0.025
6) At last now and the “A” value to the “x” values and we will get the required value B
that
B= A+X
B=0.025+2.1
B=2.125cm
2:- Place about 5.6 napthalene balls are bed chamber.
3:- keep the temp and pressure probe below in bed chamber to show the bed temp and pressure.
4:-Switch “On” the heater.
5:- Slowly regulate the air flow and set it up to a moderate value.
6:- Note temperature of bed and air.
7:- Notice the any change in diameter of Nephtalene balls wait for hour
8:- After sufficient time take the Nephtalene balls out and again measure the diameter, These ball be
change in diameters after on hour . which shows that is mass transfer from nephtalene balls through
sublimation process in fluidizing bed appartous .(unit)
