Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain V8.8 Release Notes 1

New Features

This section describes the new features in the Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain
family of products. Products that are not specifically listed indicate there
were no major feature changes to these products included in this release.

Aspen PIMS
The following enhancements and improvements are included in the V8.8
release of PIMS:
 LP Solver Upgrade
The XPRESS LP solver has been upgraded to Version 27.
 FlexCell Upgrade
FlexCell is a third party component used to read Excel data for the XLP
matric generator. This component has been upgraded to Version 6.4.3.
 New Non-Linear Model (XNLP) Parallel Processing Option
The Perform Single Case Optimization on Separate Process option
has been added to the XNLP Settings dialog box Parallel Processing
tab. Selecting this option allows for single cases to be performed with a
parallel solve, thus helping to resolve possible out of memory issues for
solves of large single case models.
 New Error Message
The following error message has been added.
o E040 - Material XXX used in the Cut Scheme is disabled or undefined.
This error message helps to indicate when an entry in table CRDCUTS
contains an undefined material.
 New Reporting Option
The ESOBJFN (Use the Economic Summary’s objective function in the
report title) option has been added to the Miscellaneous tab on the
Reporting dialog box. Use this setting to display the economic objective
function value at the top of the Full Solution report. This value is the
same as the objective function found in the economic summary section. If
this option is not selected, the objective function value from the execution
log is displayed as the report title.

 aspenONE PIMS Platinum
The following enhancements have been added in the V8.8 release of
aspenONE PIMS Platinum:
 APS SQL databases
You can now set how many weeks on either side of the current date to
load by using the Timespan option found on the flowsheet configuration
Data Source screen. Use this setting to avoid timeout issues when working
with a large model.
 Unit View
Additional ways to view and filter Unit information have been added. You

can now choose to hide or show utility and/or material streams

using new options found under . This allows you to more easily just
see the information of most interest.
 Create Equation Templates
This release gives you the ability to create templates to save user
defined equations. Save templates based on formulas using the Create
Equation dialog box. Available templates can be viewed and edited from
the new Equation Templates dialog box.
 Values by Case Enhancements
The Values by Case wizard now allows you to easily add capacities and

process limits to a table by using these two new filtering options found
on the Properties tab.
 Export dashboards to Excel
Dashboard information can now be exported to Excel. For each chart, a
snapshot is created and the data associated with the chart is available. For
each grid, the associated data and formatting can be exported to Excel.

Assay Management
The following enhancements were added to Assay Management for the V8.8
release:
 Improved Crude Cutting Workflow
V8.8 will track changes that require a re-cutting to any or all crudes and
only perform cutting when necessary. This enhancement helps reduce
unneeded re-cutting when assay data has not changed, thus improving
performance.
 Entry of Whole Crude Distillation Curve via Excel Import
Distillation data is used to calculate cut yields for an assay. This data
overrides any Cut Yield data entered with properties. Distillation data for
whole crude can now be entered using the AspenTech Excel import format
and then directly imported into Assay Management when transferring
data.

  On-Demand Transfer of PIMS Table Data
Performance has been improved by adding a new step to the Setup
Wizard. Assay data is now only passed from PIMS when running the
wizard. Allowing for manual retrieval eliminates unnecessary data passing
every time Assay Management is initiated, even when assay data from
PIMS is not required.
 Automated Property Adjustments
The Adjustments option has been added to the Property-Cut Map tab
associated with the Cut Crudes form that allows you to set an adjustment
by property and steam property. This allows you to modify values in the
PIMS Excel Assay sheets using a constant offset, a formula based on that
property or a formula based on any properties in the model.
 Enhanced Custom Assay Library Capabilities
Custom libraries can now be created anywhere on your computer or
anywhere on the network using any file name. You can define additional
users to access the crudes in the library as well as move crudes between
libraries.

The following V8.8 enhancements apply to APS, AOS and MBO.

Note: Regarding automation, EventUTD methods for all three products have
been replaced with EventsColl methods. Changes to EventUTD methods
cease as of V8.8, therefore EventsColl methods should always be used when
applicable.
Publishing Improvements
 Material service events (event type 3) and tank property change events
(event type 4) are now being published to the _EVENTS table.
 EXPORT_EVENT_DATA has been added as a CONFIG keyword that
allows for the publication of Start/Stop links, source location ID,
destination ID and route IDs.

The following V8.8 enhancements apply to APS and MBO only.
Excel Integration Utility Enhancements
 Assay Worksheet
The EIU assay PIMS_PROP_XREF worksheet now allows you to specify
ABML, UBML and VBA property functions associated with PIMS to APS and
APS to PIMS imported data through the use of two new columns.
 Settings Worksheet
You can now specify rates for Product events using the Settings
Worksheet. See the Product Shipment and Crude Receipt section
descriptions for details.

Publishing Improvements
 Material service events (event type 3) and tank property change events
(event type 4) are now being published to the _EVENTS table.

Other general improvements

 Product Hold Costs
Holding cost can now be added to products using the Product definition
dialog box Holding Cost field.

Aspen Petroleum Scheduler

The following V8.8 enhancements apply to APS only.

Dock Scheduling
 You can now create custom units of measure associated with cargos using
the Units of Measure dialog box. This dialog box can be accessed from
the Dock Screen Model menu. The UOM and UOMCONVERSION tables
have been added to support this new feature.
 The Cargo Details dialog box has a new option that allows you to select
user defined units of measure associated with the estimated quantity.
 You can now modify and add multiple tanks and tank quantities associated
with a crude receipt event that is scheduled on a voyage using the Event
Detail dialog box. Tank selections as well as tank quantities can also be
modified directly from the Crude Receipt dialog box.
With the ability to add multiple tanks for dock scheduling events, the
same event ID is now used for all associated tanks. This enhancement

 allows you to easily see this event on the Gantt screen as well as to
perform all tank operations associated with an event from one screen.

New Automation Methods

 GetCrdRunUnitDailySummDataCache
This Orion.DataCacheAuto has been modified and now allows you to get
daily data for Crude Units.
 GetBlendEVQualities
A new Orion.DataCache method, GetBlendEVQualities, has been
added that allows you to retrieve all qualities of a blend event that reside
in cached memory.

Note: A new object, Orion.DataCache, is available that contains methods

created during V8.4 and later. This object includes methods that can be used
to retrieve data in memory. Cached data retrieval methods created prior to
V8.4 are associated with the Orion.DataCacheAuto object.
 The Orion.OrionDataCache GetMaterialDataCache method has also been
added and is used to get periodic as well as daily cache data for a Tank’s
material service
The two new Orion.EventsColl methods described below are only available
for use with the Event dialog boxes, and it is only applicable when used in
conjunction with the User Calc button.
 CurrentEventCancelDlg allows you to close an Event dialog box without
saving any changes. It can be executed from VB and VBA code.
 CurrentEventOkDlg allows you to save changes made to a selected
event and then close the event dialog. It can be executed from VB and
VBA code.

Publishing Improvements

Other Enhancements/Improvements
 DERIVED_PROP_BIAS
This new CONFIG keyword controls how header bias is applied.
Specifically this keyword is for special blends (e.g., blends without heel
correction) with derived properties.
 PS Tank Locations
Tank definitions now include the ability to specify the tank location used
for pipeline scheduling.
 Accessing User Defined Command/Tools
User defined command/tools on the navigation tree Tools tab are now
launched by double-clicking on the desired command.

  Multi-Event Excel Editor
The Multi-Event Excel Editor now allows you to specify %, quantity or rate
depending on the type of event. This applies to the following event types:
o crude receipt
o crude transfer
o crude run
o blend
o blend rundown

Aspen Refinery Multi-Blend

Optimizer
The following V8.8 enhancements apply to MBO only.

 New Keywords
CONFIG keywords MIP_OPTCR and MIP_OPTCA have been added.
These keywords are used as Xpress MIP termination criteria. Search stops
when relative or absolute gap is less than the specified keyword value.
The CONFIG keyword DERIVED_PROP_BIAS has been added that allows
for special handling of header bias for blends without heel correction. See
the Setting Keywords topic for specifics associated with this new
keyword.
 Enhanced Warning Message
The W1005 warning message has been extended to appear when
validation is run if non-derived property values are missing from tank
beginning inventory.
 New Automation Methods
o A new OrionMBOLib.DataCache method, GetBlendEVQualities has
been added that allows you to retrieve all qualities of a blend event
that reside in cached memory.
o The GetMaterialDataCache method has also been added. This
method is used to get periodic as well as daily cache data for a Tank’s

 Handling of _TANKS_MBO and _SERVICE_MBO Tables has changed

If the Clear Results When Publishing option is selected and a Publish
All is initiated, all the entries will be deleted from these two tables and
only data related to the current screen will be written. If the Clear
Results when Publishing option is not selected, the tanks pertaining to
that screen only will be deleted and written to the two tables.

 Multi-Event Excel Editor

The Multi-Event Excel Editor now allows you to specify %, quantity or
rate depending on the type of event. This applies to the following event
types:
o blend
o blend rundown

Aspen Olefins Scheduler

The following V8.8 enhancements apply to AOS only.

 New Automation Methods

New ATOlefinsSchedLib.EventsColl methods include:

aspenONE PIMS Platinum

Use of Safari Browser
Issue: Under certain conditions, such as slow network, response, the Safari
browser will prematurely force the Platinum page to reload which can result
in either a blank home screen or a dialog being displayed to confirm the page
reload. Reloading the page in this scenario will not work and other
notifications may appear.
Resolution: Use the Chrome browser on the iPad instead of Safari.

Aspen PIMS
Cluster Runs
Issue: PIMS appears to hang during cluster run when using Windows 8 or
Windows Server 2012. This only occurs when using the PIMS clustering
feature with the noted operating systems. Regular case stacking is not
affected.
Resolution: Runs complete and data and logs will be available though it
appears as if the run does not finish since the final end time stamp does not
appear. You can still use the clustering feature with Windows 8 or Windows
Server 2012, but you will need to manually check to be sure the run is
complete and then access data and logs as usual.

 Error Appears When Writing to
Intermediate Files
Issue: Errors may occur when writing to intermediate files, such as
solutionfil.fil and recursionfil.fil, when running XLP with case stacking when
using Windows 7 or 8 and Access.
Resolution: This error occurs when indexing is set on the working folder.
Removing/turning off the “Allow files in this folder to have contents
indexed in addition to file properties” option associated with the working
folder will resolve the error. Search for Solution ID 134228 on the
AspenTech support site for specific details on how to resolve this issue.

Aspen Report Writer

Aspen Report Writer is not compatible with and therefore will not run when
using 64-bit versions of Microsoft Office, for example, Office 2010 64bit.

Aspen Petroleum Scheduler

Multi-Blend Optimizer (MBO)

If using Office 365, databases created with earlier versions of Access will
not open in Aspen Petroleum Scheduler (APS) and Aspen Refinery Multi-Blend
Optimizer (MBO). This includes installed AspenTech demonstration models
created in Access.

Oracle Model issue
Issue: Oracle models will not work correctly with a lowercase username for
database connection. Behavior is not consistent and crashes may occur.
Resolution: Change the username to upper case for database connection.

Crash Occurs When Trying to Simulate

using Oracle 12
Issue: Inability to Simulate when using Oracle 12.
Resolution: A necessary component has been deprecated with Oracle 12.
Oracle Client 11g contains the required component. You will therefore need
to do the following:
1. Download the Oracle Client 11g installation.
2. Start the installer and select Custom as the installation type then click
Next.
3. Skip the software updates and click Next.
4. On the Available Product Components page, select Oracle Objects
for OLE.
5. Complete the installation for the component.

Aspen RenameTags
Use of Aspen RenameTags.exe is not supported in this release. Changing
tags using RenameTags may not consistently modify all tags in all tables.
