3 SUMMARY
This Nitrogen Generator Package (NGP) (Package No. U-08443) consists of three
functional units, two Feed Air Compressor units (FAC, Tag No. K 101 A/B) and one
Nitrogen Generator Unit (NGU) both integrated in one package. Compressed air is
filtered through the Feed Air filters (Tag No. CB 101 and CB 102) located in the NGU to
ensure adequate air quality before entering the Membrane Modules located in the
Membrane Section of the NGU. A Feed Air Heater (Tag No. H 101) is provided
upstream the Membrane Modules to ensure feed air at design temperature [Ref. 2, Pos
6.4].
The NGP is equipped with instrumentation and interface junction for integration into the
vessel’s Integrated Automation System (IAS). This allows for continuous operation
without the need for any assistance once in operation.
At the outlet of the NGP, nitrogen is available at a specific product pressure [Ref. 2,
Pos. 3.4] below specified inlet pressure [Ref. 2, Pos. 2.7]. During start up, the nitrogen
enriched outlet flow is continuously monitored for oxygen content, and in cases of off-
spec product gas, the NGP will vent such gas to atmosphere. After the start up phase
has elapsed, i.e. the feed air has thoroughly heated the Membrane Modules to design
temperature, the NGP will produce a continuous flow of dry nitrogen at stated perfor-
mance values.
An Oxygen Analyser (Tag. No. AIT 301) monitors continuously the quality of the
nitrogen product flow. Appropriate alarms and shutdown systems (SSD's) are provided
for safe operation.
The NGP can deliver nitrogen at a higher purity than specified. This, however, results
in a corresponding reduction of produced nitrogen. The NGP is always ready for start
up and may run continuously for extended periods of time.

4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
As a result, a non-permeated, super-dry nitrogen flow exits the other bore side end of
the separator. The permeated oxygen-enriched gas is lead to atmosphere via the
separator's side connection and further via vent line to atmosphere.

In general, the capacity (nitrogen flow rate) at given conditions of feed air and product
quality is proportional to the number and size of separator. Therefore, the size and
number of separators constitute the main design parameters. However, the variations
in feed air temperature, and in particular the feed air pressure, which is the driving
force for permeation, will also affect the overall performance.
Downstream the flow Quality Control Valve (Tag. No. QCV 301), a sample stream of
the nitrogen product is drawn off for analysis and indication of the oxygen content (Tag.
No. AIT 301) of the product flow.
The NGP is equipped with START / STANDBY function that is activated from the
Pressure Transmitter (Tag. No. PT 401) located on N2 Buffer Tank (Tag No. V 401) If
the tank pressure is equal or lower than low pressure set point, PL 401, [Ref. 2, Pos
6.16], then the NGP START mode is activated and displayed in LCP 301. When the
high pressure set point is reached, PH 401 [Ref.2, Pos. 6.17], then the NGP enters into
STANDBY mode.
The Buffer Tank (Tag No. V 401) Pressure Transmitter (Tag. No. PT 401) is equipped
with alarm functions for alarm control and Pressure monitoring. Alarm set points PALL
401, PAL 401, PAH 401and PAHH 401 are specified as in [Ref. 2, Pos. 6.14, 6.15, 6.18
and 6.19, respectively].
4.6.3 Product Gas Off Spec. System Shut Down (SSD) Mode
Any deviation from normal operation that activates the SSD mode, requires immediate
operator attention.
In cases where the sample gas Flow Switch (Tag No. FIS 302) is triggered, then this
indicates that there is no sample gas flow through the Oxygen Analyser (Tag. No. AIT
301), and the SSD mode is activated.

4.6.3.1 Oxygen Off Spec. HIGH HIGH
If, for some reason, the oxygen content should continue to increase to the OXYGEN
HIGH HIGH level [Ref. 2, Pos. 6.8], then immediate attention is required and the
PRODUCT GAS OFF SPEC. is announced in LCP (Tag No. LCP 301) and SSD mode
is activated. In this mode the Nitrogen Generator Package (Package No. U-08443) will
shut down.
5 CONTROL PHILOSOPHY
As previously mentioned, the membrane performance is dependent on the feed air
temperature and pressure. For the NGP (Package No. U-08443), the design
philosophy is based on producing a product gas at a fixed design gas purity set point
[Ref. 2, Pos. 6.6] within a total pressure drop over Nitrogen Generator Unit as stated in
[Ref. 2, Pos. 2.7 & 3.4], at normal feed air conditions [Ref. 2, Pos. 4], and Feed Air
Temperature Set Point [Ref. 2, Pos. 6.4].
In cases where for some reason the feed air inlet pressure should vary, the
performance of the NGP will also vary. In cases where the ambient air temperature
varies, the Inlet Air Heater (Tag. H 101) will compensate for this accordingly to ensure
design temperature conditions. Of these two cases, it is the variation in feed air
pressure that has the most profound effect on the NGP, in terms of performance.
In the NGP, the control philosophy is based on a set pressure from the FAC, (Tag No.
K 101 A/B) unit. This set pressure together with initial system temperature, flow and
pressure settings via Heater (Tag No. H 101) and flow Quality Control Valve (Tag No.
QCV 301) ensure a stable performance which is verified against the product gas quality
via the Oxygen Analyser (Tag. No. AIT 301).

7 PERFORMANCE TEST
7.1 Introduction
This test is basically provided to ensure that the NGP will meet the specified product
capacity and quality, at specified process conditions [Ref. 2].
The NGP instrumentation, associated instrumentation and meters will measure these
operating data [Ref. 1, 2 ].
Prior to FAT start-up, the NGP is run for a certain period in order to ensure that the
membrane modules are fully dried out.
The Performance Test Sheet comprising all important instrument indications for the
package will be used during the tests and shall be signed by all parties to show
acceptance of the plant performance.
After start up, pressure, temperature, N2 flow and specified product quality (Ref. Sec.
7.2 Acceptance Criteria / Performance Data) will be adjusted until satisfactory
operation and stable conditions are achieved.
After the system has started-up, temperature and process parameters are to be in a
stable condition before the Performance Test data logging is commenced.
The installed Flow Indicator (Tag No. FI 301) will measure the nitrogen flow.
If the operating process parameters such as pressure, temperature and mol weight are
different from calibration values of Flow Indicator, the reading will be corrected
manually in accordance with flow meter reading corrections formula located on
Performance Test Sheet.
The installed oxygen analyser (Tag No. AIT 301) will measure the oxygen content in
the product gas. The inert gas O2 content must be less than the value specified in Sec.
7.2 Acceptance Criteria / Performance Data and [Ref. 2 ].
8 TEST REPORTS
The log sheets completed during each test shall be signed to show acceptance by all
parties, i.e. SELLER, BUYER representatives and CLASS.
