1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 PURPOSE
This specification defines the allowable static loads on nozzles for common types of equipment for the Liwa
Plastics Project to be built in the Sohar Industrial complex and the related new NGL Extraction plant
located in Fahud, Sultanate of Oman.
1.2 SCOPE
Allowable dynamic loads are not addressed and where applicable shall be agreed with the equipment
supplier.
Contractor shall consider these minimum loads and directives when ordering equipment. These minimum
loads shall be the starting point for further stress analyzes and supporting design of the connecting piping

5. Other Project Specifications and standards
6. Licensor General Specifications and standards
7. International codes and standards
8. Seller’s specifications and standards as accepted by Purchaser
The most stringent requirement shall be applied unless agreed otherwise with Purchaser. Any conflict not
solved by the order of precedence shall be referred to Purchaser for clarification and resolution.
5.1.1 Allowable loads for connections to pressure vessels and TEMA type shell & tube exchangers are specified
in the tables in Appendix 2.
5.1.2 The tabulated loads in Appendix 2 have been calculated in accordance with the requirements of NORSOK
Standard R-001.Rev.3 Nov. ’97.
5.1.3 The allowable nozzle loads are for pressure vessels and TEMA type shell & tube exchangers fabricated
from ferrous materials.
5.1.4 The indicated loads act at the nozzle to shell (or head) intersection and true normal and tangential to the
shell (or head) at that point.
5.1.5 Nozzle loads and moments specified in the tables shall be assessed per WRC 107 and 297 or BS EN
13445. An industry recognized finite element analysis program may be used if approved by CB&I.
5.1.6 The stress analysis shall be performed for the axial force (FA) acting outwards together with the internal
design pressure and for the case of the force acting inwards with zero pressure.
5.2.1 The allowable loads on Air Cooled Heat exchangers due to external connected piping shall meet two (2)
times the values stated in API 661 / ISO 13706.
5.3.1 For piping connected to API 650 tanks, the allowable nozzle loads shall be as per API-650 appendix P.
For nozzles not covered by this appendix, such as nozzles on tanks with a diameter less than 36 m (120
ft), nozzles in the upper half of the tank, and nozzles larger than DN 1200 (NPS 48), the allowable load in
combination with eventual nozzle flexibility rates shall be provided by the Supplier.
Liwa Plastics Project
5.3.2 For API 620 tanks, after the pipe stress analysis is complete, the nozzle loads shall be provided to the tank
engineer who will check the loads per API 620. If the stresses exceed the allowables the tank engineer
shall work with the piping engineer to reach an acceptable solution.
5.4 FILTERS
5.4.1 The allowable loads on filter nozzles due to connected piping shall be equal to the loads specified in
Appendix 2.
5.5.1 As a minimum, nozzle loads on plate and frame exchangers shall be based on Table 1, “Standard Service
Nozzle Loading” of API 662 / ISO 15547 Part 1. Equipment bids shall include a cost option to comply with
loads listed in Table 2, “Severe Service Nozzle Loading.” The need to require the Table 2 loads shall be
determined on an item basis.
5.6.1 The allowable loads on brazed aluminium plate fin heat exchangers (cold box) shall meet the requirements
as listed in API 662/ISO 15547 Part 2.
5.7.1 Nozzle loads and moments for double pipe and multi-tube hairpin heat exchangers shall be evaluated on
an item by item basis.
The following paragraphs are to be used as a starting point for determining acceptable allowable loads on
nozzles. In all cases the Supplier is to confirm that in case of increased nozzle loadings beyond the API
requirements, the equipment and parts thereof, are fully guaranteed regarding performance, continuous
uninterrupted operation, freedom from equipment distortion and misalignment, and that MTBF intervals and
operating lifetime are as defined in API/ ISO and applicable project specifications.
6.1.1 The allowable loads for API 610 / ISO 13709 pumps shall be factored from the following list:
Liwa Plastics Project
6.1.2 For vertical sump pumps, the allowable nozzle loads as per API 610 / ISO 13709 table 4 for design
temperature smaller than 100°C (212 °F), and 2 times API / ISO table 4 for all others.
6.1.3 For pumps constructed to ASME B73.1 and B73.2 allowable loads shall be in accordance with Hydraulic
Institute Pump Standards section 9.6.2.
6.1.4 For centrifugal pumps covered by other codes, requirements as per those will apply. Supplier shall confirm
the requirements or shall specify the loads.
6.2 STEAM TURBINES API 611 & API 612 / ISO 10437
6.2.1 The allowable loads for API 611 & API 612 / ISO 10437 steam turbines shall be factored from the following
list:
6.3.1 The allowable nozzle loads for API 617 compressors, due to external connected piping, shall be factored
from the following list:
6.3.2 For Expanders the same requirements apply. Supplier shall indicate the intersection point for the
combination of individual results. Special attention shall be given to hot and cold designs including
temperature variation thereof.
6.3.3 For integrally geared compressors, the supplier shall indicate the allowable nozzle loads in the proposal.
Liwa Plastics Project
6.4.1 The allowable nozzle loads at the Supplier’s provided interface shall be furnished by the Supplier.
6.5 BLOWERS
6.5.1 Blowers shall alternatively be quoted with flexible pipe connectors (rubber, fabric, or metallic) on the
suction and discharge side such that the connecting piping can be directly anchored. Flexible pipe
connectors are recommended to reduce loads on the blower casing to a minimum.
7.1.1 Heater terminals shall be designed to accept two (2) times the allowable moments and movements for
tubes listed in API 560 / ISO 13705 Tables 6 and 7, and three (3) times the allowable moments and
movements for manifolds listed in Tables 8 and 9. These loadings shall be checked at the interface
flanges between the heater terminals and external piping.
8.1.1 Skid piping shall preferably be anchored at the Supplier provided interface. The Supplier shall indicate
thermal movement for non-anchored piping. The allowable loads at interfaces shall be as a minimum
according Appendix 2.values. Allowable loads due to piping connected to equipment mounted on the skid
shall be as specified for that particular equipment.
9.1.1 For Standard Equipment, namely “Off-the-Shelf” equipment and catalogue items, the Supplier shall specify
allowable loadings. Zero loads will not be accepted.
9.1.2 For equipment with aluminium flanges, other than Brazed Aluminium Plate Fin Exchangers, the flange
thickness shall be 1.5 times the thickness specified by ASME B16.5. Aluminium flanges in cryogenic
service shall be weld neck flanges.
