Introduction (ভূিমকা)
Few Interesting facts on Bengali Language:-
1. Bengali evolved circa (approximately) 1000–1200 CE (Common Era) from Sanskrit
and Magadhi Prakrit.
2. Bengali is spoken by more than 261 million people worldwide as a 1st or 2nd
language.
3. Bengali is one of the official languages of Sierra Leone (Africa).
4. Bengali is the language after which the International Mother Language Day is based.
5. The National Anthem of India and Bangladesh both are written in Bengali.
Alphabet (বণমালা)
Like in the English language, Bengali alphabet also comprises of Vowels and
Consonants. But in contrast to the English alphabet, the vowels and consonants of the
Bengali alphabet are grouped in separate tables.
Vowels- Called as ‘swaraborno’ (pronounced as: ‘saw-ro-bor-no’). This group consists of
12 letters.
Consonants- Called as ‘banjonborno’ (pronounced as: ‘ban-jon-bor-no’). This group
consists of 35 letters.

e.g. It is used to address Friends, Brothers, Sisters, Nephews, Nieces etc.

e.g. They are used to address Parents, Uncles, Aunts, Grand Parents etc.
• Words from serial number 11- 13 are used to address people both around your age and
elder to you.
