200 bedded general hospital
Introduction:
The industrial revolution brought enormous social changes that impacted on
health and health care. The rapid growth of cities provided opportunities for
transmission of infections, unsafe factories increased injuries, death rates rose
rapidly, and social supports crumbled with increasing population mobility.
Hospitals complement and amplify the effectiveness of many other parts of the
health system, providing continuous availability of services for acute and
complex conditions.
Gwalior city is one of the fastest growing cities in Madhya Pradesh. According
to health department of Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior requires more hospitals to
serve whole urban area. Under the Goal, “Ensuring geographic and economic
access to primary and secondary quality health care and family welfare services
to all people of Madhya Pradesh within a span of five to seven years”. It is
required to propose new general hospital within the city.
Design Requirements:
The proposed general hospital should have outpatient department, Inpatient
department, All diagnostic services i.e. radiology, pathology etc., Emergency
department, residential spaces for doctors, nurses & ward boys. This hospital
should follow the requirements provided by Indian Standard Codes and IPHS.
Submission Requirements:
Review 1 - Literature Study: (5 Marks)
The literature review should cover detailed study of hospitals, its types and all
the necessary departments.

Review 2 - Live Case Study: (5 marks)
Students are required to visit general hospitals & multi-speciality hospitals in
groups to understand the accessibility, connectivity to various department,
planning & management etc.

Review - Site Identification & Analysis: (10 Marks)
Site analysis is important to achieve a successful design and should be done
carefully. It may involves taking an inventory or checklist of site elements and
carefully analysing those factors relative to the functionality of the user. Site
analysis shall include the following requirements:
1. Literature review on healthcare facilities in Gwalior.
a. Major diseases in last 5 years
b. Classification of healthcare facilities in Gwalior.
c. Concentration of healthcare facilities at local level (refer Gwalior
map for representation)
d. Inflow of patients and catchment area according to the hierarchy of
the healthcare facilities.
e. Unserved areas for healthcare facilities.
f. Scenario development for 200 bedded hospital in unserved areas.
2. Identification of site for 200 bedded hospital:
a. Site requirements for 200 bedded hospital
b. Proposed developments for healthcare facilities within the city.
c. Selection of suitable site with site dimensions on map.
3. Detailed site analysis:
a. Natural features
i. Geology: Geological history, Bedrock type & depth etc.
ii. Geomorphology: Landform, Soil type, Topography & slope,
Natural drain.
iii. Hydrology & vegetation: Ground water, water shed, types of
plants & trees, Existing land cover.
iv. Climate: Solar orientation, wind, precipitation & humidity
b. Socio-cultural features of catchment area (existing and proposed)
i. Existing landuse of surrounding areas,
ii. Accessibility, Modes of transport & Traffic flow,
iii. Population density of surrounding (existing and projected),
Development control regulations, Socio-economic character,
iv. Service utilities: Water supply, Sanitation & Drainage,
Electric supply and communication.
v. Historic factors: Any nearby historic building or site,
Landmarks etc.
c. Aesthetic features
i. Spatial pattern of development, specific typology of building
aesthetics representing the locality or the city.
ii. Visual features: Views & Vistas, water bodies & vegetation
for environmental protection.
