The Tools of Downlighting
-Lighting is an art...with techniques that can create
moods, highlight areas o{ interest, permit the functional
use of space and enhance our overall appreciation of lile.
Downlighting ulilizes oplical reflectors, re{raclors, lenses,
baffles and other precise components to control light and
brightness. Shown below are examples o{ the "Tools o{
Downlighting" that help the lighting designer creale an
effective liqhling environment.
Lenses & Diffusers Lenses and diffusers provide the means for bending,
shaping or diffusing light. The Plano Convex lens projects
a geometric beam to light a picture; a fluted spread lens
produces an oval beam for a wall wash. The fresnel and
the diffuser provide soft and pleasant general lighting. All
have their function.
Black Balfiles A black phenolic baffle absorbs all light rays reaching its
surface. This eliminates objectionable glare produced by
T wide angle light beams. The crisp, clean appearance
,'1 of the low brighlness aperture adds to the baffle's
,/, \ general appeal.

lnsulated Ceiling
Background: Prior to 1981, building codes required that
insulation must be spaced 3" away from all recessed
lighting (to eliminate overheating and fire hazard). lndustry
practices, however, ignored the 3" spacing requirements.
Addressing this problem, the 1981 National Electrical
Code provided for two new product categories:
1. lC (lnsulated Ceiling) Fixlure designed to operate
under 90'C when covered with insulation (no 3"
spacing required).
2. Non-iC (Thermally Protected)-Fixture is equipped
with a thermal cutoul to disconnect fixture if in contact
with insulation.

Junob Becomrnendation:
lC products may be used for most applications,in direct
contact with thermal insulation, as in a home, or in
non-insulated environments.
Non-lc (Thermally Prolected) fixtures are limited in use
and should not be installed in homes. Use where higher
wattage is desired and in commercial conslruclion where
insulation is not present.

Thermal Cutout
The 'thermally protected" fixture calegory was introduced
in the 1981 National Electrical Code and is identified by
JUNO as TC (Thermal Culout). The wide range of watt-
ages and optics plus the compacl fixture size make
TC products best suited lor commercial and multFstory
buildings.
Although "TC" fixtures may be used for mosl applicalions,
if used in an insulaied ceiling, lhe insulation must be
pulled back 3", or the thermal device will disconnect
the fixture.
The "Thermal Device" combines a bFmelallic thermostat
with a low wattage heater. lt is installed in a standard 72'
knockout and, under normal conditions, has no effect on
the tixture. lf insulation covers the TC' device, an
abnormal condition, the hea'ter activates the thermostat
and disconnects the fixture.

Suspended Geiling
ln 1981, Underwriters Laboratories established a lisling for
suspended ceiling fixtures-identified by JUNO as SC
(Suspended Ceiling). The thermal protector was not
required since ceiling insulation normally is not present.
These products cover a wide range of wattages and
styles and are typically lowesi in cost.
SC products may be installed in suspended ceilings only.

Low voltage lighting oifers the lighting designer ellective tools
lor soving lighting problerfs. Low voltage lamps provide two
specific advantages over 120V systems. A sma I filament in
the lamp makes it possible io achieve highly contro led light
patterns. Reflectors, refractors, condensers, elc. all work better.
The snrall filament also makes for smal lamps, sockets, and
iixtures. The advantages therefore are in light control and iixture
size. ln choosing a ow voltage fixture, therefore, one should
have need for a tight beam and miniature fixture size.
