Hardware Requirements
DARWin has been changed to utilize a software licensing arrangement instead of the original hardware "hardlock"
device. Additionally, DARWin is now distributed on CD-ROM to allow for the distribution of more system
software to reduce installation problems.
The minimum requirements for installation are:
An IBM-compatible PC with a 486DX or higher (Pentium) processor.
Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0 or higher operating system.
16 MB of RAM
20 MB of available hard disk space.
One CD-ROM drive.
One 3 ½ inch floppy disk drive (optional).
VGA or higher resolution graphics card.
Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device.
Microsoft Windows compatible printer (optional).
Installation Procedure
The DARWin installation CD has an auto-start feature for Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 and above. In order to
install the software please following the steps:
1. Start Microsoft Windows 95 ® or Windows NT ®.
2. Insert the disk into the CD-ROM drive.
3. Close any applications that may be running on the PC.
4. If the CD-ROM does not start the installation within a few seconds, click on the “Start” button and select “Run”
5. Press the browse button and select the program “setup.exe” on the main directory of the CD-ROM and press the
“Open” button to dismiss the browse dialog box.
6. Press the “OK” button to start the setup program.
Following the installation shut down your computer before using the DARWin program. Generally this is done by
selecting the “restart” option of the installation script. Alternatively, you can restart your computer by pressing the
Start button, selecting the Shut Down... option, and press the OK button to shut down the computer.
Reboot the computer and run the DARWin program. If it fails to operate properly, see the troubleshooting section
below.
Once you have installed the program, you will have a limited number of runs of the program to test its function.
When you press the “Enter” key when the dialog box displays the message “Press <enter> to configure your
license” (or the licensing dialog box appears to indicate that you no longer have access to the program) press the
“Display Site Code” button on the dialog box. This unique code (normally 18 characters long) will need to be
returned before your Site Key can be generated to unlock the software.
The best way to receive the site key once the software has been installed is by sending an e-mail message containing
the Site Code to [email protected] or by calling toll free (888) 443-2794.
Installation Troubleshooting
In most situations, the software will function immediately. However, in some cases, there may be difficulty
encountered. There are generally three problems commonly encountered.
Disk Utilities
The Norton Utilities Speed Disk ® utility program can cause the loss of the license information from your PC
installation. To prevent this possible license loss with Norton Utilities take the following measures:
1. Open Speed Disk and choose File, Options, Customize, and Unmovable Files.
2. Specify that the *.ENT, *.RST, *.KEY, and *.41S files cannot be moved.
ODBC Installation
The most common problem is with the inability of DARWin to access the database files that reside on the PC. This
is particularly prevalent in PCs that have Microsoft Office 95 ® or Microsoft Office 98 ® installed on them. If this
problem is encountered, you will receive a message indicating the ODBC drivers are not properly installed. In order
to correct this problem, download the Microsoft Data Access Components Redistribution Typical Setup from the
Microsoft ® web site at http://www.microsoft.com/data/download2.htm.
If you received a CD version of the DARWin program, the Microsoft ® Data Access Components redistributables
version 1.5 are included on your CD to save download time. These redistributables are in the directory named
MDAC on the CD. Copy the executable file MDACFULL.EXE to your own PC in a temporary directory, and run
the program using the "Start" button on the desktop and selecting "Run". Use the browse function to find the file
MDACFULL.EXE on your PC.
If you are using Microsoft Office 98, you will require the newer version 2.01 of the redistributables. These are
located on the CD in the subdirectory MDAC2. If you are using Windows 95 or Windows 98, you will need to
install two files. First install the program DCOM95.EXE using the instructions above for the version 1.5
redistributables. Then run the MDAC_MIN.EXE file to install the data access components.
Windows NT requires the you to run only the second program, the MDAC_MIN.EXE in order to install the
redistributable files.
Network Installation
If the network installation option is selected, all of the network clients will need to be installed using the installation
program contained in the “Setup” subdirectory on the network server. This directory will need to be given the
necessary permissions to allow the installation of client software from this source.
In the network configuration, all network clients will utilize the executables and DARWin Library that are on the
network server. DARWin project files will be kept on the individual PC Workstations in the location selected during
the workstation installation. Make sure that these files are backed up on a regular basis to avoid possible loss of
valuable data. If your organization has a Networking or Information Technology staff, consult with them concerning
the local requirements for backup of files on PC Workstations.
After you install a network installation, it will be necessary to receive an authorization to be able to run the software
as a network server. All copies of DARWin are shipped with stand-alone licensing. Once you install the program on
the network server with the Network Installation option, you should:
1. Run the program from the server PC.
2. When you see the screen that contains the message “Press <enter> to configure your license” press the
enter key.
3. Press the “Display Site Code…” button on the License Configuration dialog box.
4. Copy the Site Code (by selecting the numbers with the mouse and pressing the Control-C key
combination to copy) and paste it into an e-mail document addressed to [email protected] along
with a message explaining that you need your network authorization for either your trial period (or to
begin the license period if you have already paid for the license). Alternatively you can copy the
license code and use fax or telephone to request authorization. E-mail is the preferred method since it
is more accurate.
5. When you receive the Site Key, repeat the first three steps above and enter the code you receive into
the Site Key entry box on the License Configuration dialog box. Then press the Validate button on the
dialog box to begin your authorization.
If you receive an error after exiting the license validation , it can safely be ignored. It does not indicate a failure in
the installation.
To install the network client machines from the server:
1. Make sure to create a share on the “Program Files\AASHTOWARE\DARWin31” directory. Do not place the
share on the “Setup” directory.
2. To run the setup program, press the “Start” button on the client machine and browse to find the “DARWin31”
share. Then navigate to the setup directory.
3. Run the program “setup.exe”.
If you have difficulty obtaining the same site code and licensing information on the client as you have on the server,
your client is unable to access the licensing information. Check that the line “SET CKSERVE=” in your
autoexec.bat file points to the location of the directory in which DARWin 3.1 was installed.
Novell Network Installation
This package contains a Novell NetWare® NLM which must be loaded to your NetWare server machine. The file
“CKSERVER.NLM” is used for NetWare 3.x and 4.x servers and must be awarded read, write, and filescan
permissions. This self-configuring NLM can only service the local file server it is intalled on, detecting the presence
of DARWin on this server. Please note that “CKSERVER.NLM” writes a reference to itself on the “autoexec.ncf”
file to facilitate automatic start up when the server is rebooted.
Windows 2000 Compatibility
The single known problem with DARWin 3.1 on Windows 2000 deals with file location. When installed on
Windows 2000, DARWin 3.1 will automatically point the user to the “My Documents” directory. To minimize the
difficulties encountered with this situation, it is recommended that each user of the program create a directory for
DARWin inside the “My Documents” directory. The sample files “English.dwp”, “Metric.dwp”, “Dynatest.fwd”
and “KUAB.fwd” should be copied to this new directory. The user should then start the DARWin program and go
to the Files, Preferences menu selection. Using the browse facility the file locations should be set to the directory
created in the “My Documents” directory. A network location can be used instead of the “My Documents” directory
if a network location is determined to be more desirable to administer the system. If DARWin 3.1 is being used on a
network, the network administrator should be able to make this determination.
Please note that users who are given privilege to use this software must be given “Full Access” permission to the
DARWin31 directory on the server.
Transfer of License Authorization
The licensing that you receive is specific to one PC installation. In order to move the license to another PC, the
following procedure must be followed which requires the use of a blank, formatted floppy disk. Lets assume for
example that you want to transfer a license from PC 1 to PC 2.
Note: If you are transferring from one PC Installation to another you will need to take additional steps to make
copies of the data present on PC 1. Make a copy of the file “DARWin.MDB” from PC1 and save it for later copy to
PC 2. This file contains the DARWin Library files. If you have made any changes to this file since installation, you
will need to copy this file from PC1 to the installation directory on PC 2 or you will lose your changes to the
DARWin Library. You will also need to make copies of any project files present on PC 1 and copy them to PC 2
after the installation of the software on PC 2.
To transfer the license from PC 1 to PC 2:
1. Start the DARWin program on PC2 and press the “Enter” key when the dialog box displays the message “Press
<enter> to configure your license” message.
2. From the License Configuration dialog select the “License” menu option and the “Transfer in from another
computer…” option. Supply the path to a blank, formatted floppy disk. The program will then imprint its
registration onto the diskette.
3. Remove the floppy disk from PC 2 and insert into PC 1.
4. Start the DARWin program on PC 1 and select the “Transfer Out of Computer…” option similar to the
instructions in step 2 above. The program will read the imprint on the floppy disk and write files matching it to
the floppy disk, discontinuing the license on PC 1.
5. Remove the floppy disk from PC 1 and return to PC 2.
6. Click on the “Transfer in from another Computer…” option to complete the transfer.
7. Press the “Start” button on PC1, select “Settings” and then “Control Panel”. From the control panel double-
click on the “Add/Remove Programs” icon. Find the “DARWin 3.1” entry, select it, and press the “Remove”
button. Follow the instructions to remove the program from PC 1.

DARWin Release 3.1 Enhancements
The DARWin 3.1 program was the same as the DARWin 3.01.003 maintenance release with the exception of the
replacement of the “hardlock” technology with the software locking feature.
Year 2000 Compatibility
The DARWin 3.1 program has been tested for effective operation beyond the year 2000. No calculation errors will
be caused by operation past this date. However, limitations in the underlying operating system of the PC upon
which DARWin is installed may affect the program. If this occurs, please contact the operating system vendor for
specific information or patches.
