4.0 Introduction

4.0 Introduction

For tasks of subject Foundation Engineering BFC 43103 (Semester 2

2018/2019), each group will be given a topics to design a foundation to be done in
working team. Each group need to obtain a bore log of different location and identify
its characteristics. Besides that, each group also required to find structure plan and
identify the project (Three storey-building) to be designed.

This report presents the outcome of the site investigation carried out for
proposed construction site in proposed commercial development of 20 units 3-storey
shop house on lot 2474, Miri Greenville Sarawak.

After the structures plan has been identified and site investigation report, we
are required to analyzed the soil properties and determine the load to be carried by
each column in our structures plan.

Next, after done analyzed the soil properties, we need to design the shallow
foundation by using Terzaghi’s equation for shallow square foundation formula. After
calculate the size of foundation using shallow square foundation, we check the
settlement by using Meyerhof’s equation.

After designing the shallow foundation of three storey building, we found out
that there was no overlapping between the footings. Therefore, we could proceed to
check the settlement of the foundation instead of redesign it as a deep foundation. The
smallest settlement that we had obtained was about 10 mm while the largest
settlement that we had obtained was about 73 mm. Since the settlement was less than
25 mm and more than 65 mm, size for these foundation be should recalculate and
redesign.

1.1 Objective

The objective of this project is to:

i. It is an exercise of team work and coordination in carrying out a study within a
given time frame.
ii. Students are trained to relate knowledge acquired from lectures with a real-life
situation by critically assessing and learning from past cases.
iii. Students are encouraged to engage in engineering practice professionally

5.0 Project Information

5.1 Project Brief

The project has been conducted at Miri Greenville Sarawak, this project is given by
our project director to examine and perform the task of design of foundation. It is
clear from several international sources that ground engineering risk is one of the
largest elements of technical and financial risk in civil engineering and building
projects. This project is to obtain the bore log and identifies its characteristics.
Besides that, this project also need to determine the load carried by every column.

From the engineering plan, we need to determine the load of every column and group
company, the soil given different types of soil properties based on its layer, which we
need to consider the soil properties by each layer.

Throughout this project, it is important that to justify the design considerations,

bearing capacity and settlement of the condition that could happen in the future. As
stated by Institution of Civil Engineers (1991), it is important to remember that: “You
pay for a site investigation whether you have one or not. The special considerations in
the construction will be amend once the results and analysis has been finalized in this
project.

I. The SI report
According to the SI report that we received from the bore log, the field
investigation works begun on 9th October 1993 and completed on 20th December 1993.
Laboratory works were done on selected soil and rock sample. A 300m long thin
walled sampling tubes was used to collect the soil samples. The thin walled sampling
tube was installed and driven into the soil by drop hammer. The soil samples taken
were then jacked out from the sampling tube using a soil extrude. The soil samples
collected were kept in the standard wooden box marked with depth from top to
bottom of the sampling.

Page | 10
II. Laboratory test
The following laboratory tests were carried out in accordance with BS
Standard, Codes of Practices and Design Manual of a selected samples.
a.Moisture content on soil samples
b. Density on rock samples
c.Water absorption on rock samples
d. Compressible strength on rock samples
e.Chemical test on soil/rock samples

5.2 Soil Properties

5.2.1 Subsurface Conditions

The study area on the data of field investigation consisted different elevations
which is around 29.15 m, 30.11 m, 30.07 m, and 30.13 m. However, the foundation
within the depths of the drilled boreholes consists mostly of sand (very silty sand,
gravelly fine sand), silt (slightly sandy silt, sandy silt, slightly gravelly silt), gravel,
clay (sandy clay) and silt stone depending on the depth of exploration covered.

5.2.2 Subsoil Condition

This section briefly describes the soil conditions encountered at the site. Detailed
soil conditions are presented in each bore-log in the appendices of Boreholes Logs.
Based on the data collected from borehole 1,2,3 and 4, the soil layers in this area can
be classified as follows:
a) Top soil
This is top layer of soil in this area. Thickness of this layer is between 0 meter
to 0.15 meter. This layer formed in the depth between 0.15 – 16.50 m
depends on the location of the boreholes.
b) Sand Layer
This layer consists of by medium dense, light brown reddish and yellowish-
brown sand depends on the depth of soils.

Page | 11
c) Silt Layer
This layer formed in the depth between 0.15 – 30.00 m depends on the
location of the boreholes. This layer consists of very stiff, reddish brown and
dark gray yellowish-brown sand with a low plasticity depends on the depth of
soils.
d) Gravel Layer
This layer depths are varies depending on location of boreholes. Some gravel
mixed with sand and silt layer forming gravelly fine sand and slightly
gravelly silt layer. This layer contains a weak, moderately weak, and very
strong silt stone. The strength of the silt stone depends on the depth.
e) Silt stone Layer
This layer consists of yellow brown with thin laminae dark gray and highly
weathered silt stone. The thickness of this layer area between 24.15 –
27.15 m. The silt stone layer mostly can be found in borehole 1.

5.3 Field Exploration and Testing

5.3.1 Drilling
The following data need to be recorded:-

i. Rate of drilling:
The depth of the borehole at the completion of each day or shift and
the limits of each run of the core barrel should be recorded. The actual
penetration rate for each run or part of a run should be measured. Core
diameter and changes of core size (recorded by reference to B.S. 4019 or as
metric dimension).
ii. Casing:
It is essential that the progress of installation of the casing be recorded
relative to the depth of the borehole; the diameter of the casing need not be
recorded except where relevant to interpretation of the data.

5.3.2 Sampling
Two types of soil samples can be obtained during subsurface
exploration which is disturbed and undisturbed.

Page | 12
i. Disturbed Sampling

Disturbed samples are generally obtained to determine the soil type,

gradation, classification, consistency, density, presence of contaminants,
stratification, etc. These samples are considered disturbed since the
sampling process modifies their natural structure.

ii. Undisturbed Sampling

Undisturbed samples are used to determine the in place strength,
compressibility (settlement), natural moisture content, unit weight,
permeability, discontinuities, fractures and fissures of subsurface
formations.

Depth of foundation (shallow) = 3 m

Type of soil = medium dense, light brown reddish of very silty sand
Specific unit weight of silty sand = ɤdry  15 kN/m^3

Example calculation for size foundation using BH 1 soil
properties with load 0-39 kN

ϕ' = 31°, c' = 3, Nc = 40.41, Nq = 25.28, Ny = 22.65, ɤ= 15kN/m³

q = yDf = (15)(3) =45

qu = 1.3 c' Nc + q Nq + 0.4 ɤ B Ny

= (1.3) (3) ( 40.41) + (45) (25.28) + (0.4) (15) B (22.65)
qu = 1295.199 + 135.9 B

qu = qu

117
= (1295.199 + 135.9 B ) B²

By using Trial & Error method

117 = 1295.199 B² + 135.9 B³

B = 0.296 m ≈ 0.3 m

Hence, the size of foundation for borehole 1 (area 1) with load 39 kN is 0.3m x 0.3m.
