MTH 101: QUANTITATIVE TECHNIQUES

December, 2013 To be submitted by 02/01/14, 6pm

Answer all questions.

1. Solve each of the following linear equations below.

(a) 2 x(6 x  1)  21  8 x  x(3  12 x)

3w  1 7w  2
(b) 1 
5 15

10 y 1 2 y  1
(c)  
9 3 9

2. Use the Method of Substitution to solve the problems below.

8 x  y  13
(a)
3x  4 y  6

x  3y  7
(b)
2 x  6 x  4

3. Solve the following using the Method of Elimination

5 x  10 y  1
(a)
x  2 y  8
7x  6 y  0
(b)
2x  3y  0

4. (a) Solve the system using Cramer’s rule.

3 x  7 y  2 z   8
 2 x  5 y  z  10
8 x  2 y  3z  38

(b) Solve the system using the Matrix approach.

6 x  4 y  8 z  56
x  4 y  z  5
3x  y  9 z  10

5. (a) Solve the quadratic equations by factorization.

i. z 2  11z  24  0

ii. w2  13w  12  0

(b) Solve using the quadratic formula.

i. x 2  32 w  12 x

ii. y 2  6 y  27

6. (a) Suppose I discovered that my cat had a taste for the adorable little geckoes that live in the
bushes and vines in my yard, back when I lived in Arizona. In one month, suppose he deposited
the following on my carpet: six gray geckoes, twelve geckoes that had dropped their tails in an
effort to escape capture, and fifteen geckoes that he'd chewed on a little. Only one of the geckoes
was gray, chewed on, and tailless; two were gray and tailless but not chewed on; two were gray
and chewed on but not tailless. If there were a total of 24 geckoes left on my carpet that month,
and all of the geckoes were at least one of "gray", "tailless", and "chewed on", how many were
tailless and chewed on but not gray?

(b) Given that U   1, 2,3, 4,5,6,7 , A   2, 4,5 , B   3,5, 7 ,

C=  2,3, 4,5, 7 and D=  1, 2,3, 4, 6

Find
i.  B  A  C ' ii. D '  A  B ' 
iii.  A ' B    A  D ' iv.  A ' B  '  A  D ' '
(7) (a) A merchant plans to sell two models of home computers at costs of $250 and $400,
respectively. The $250 model yields a profit of $45 and the $400 model yields a profit of $50.
The merchant estimates that the total monthly demand will not exceed 250 units. Find the
number of units of each model that should be stocked in order to maximize profit. Assume that
the merchant does not want to invest more than $70,000 in computer inventory.

(b) Find the minimum value of the objective function

z  4x  2 y
Where x  0 and y  0 Subject to the constraints
x  2y  6
3x  y  7
x  2 y  7
