The servant and the prince were like two peas in a pod even though the prince was born with a
silver spoon in his mouth and the servant was born with chicken feed. The king had a very hard time with
that because he was a fat cat. It was like a bolt from the blue when the prince asked the king to buy the

were up until the eleventh hour walking away from the castle. The prince felt like a fish out of water
because he was out of the castle for so long. The prince wanted to drop the servant like a hot potato, but
he didn’t.
The servant led them to London. He said, “We had to look for what sounded like a shack. It would
be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Every time we thought we found it, we were barking up the
wrong tree.”
The prince got under the collar but when they got there, he was tickled pink. The prince felt
homesick so he said that there is more than one way to skin a cat and he was going home. When he got

Idiom Meaning

Did you find all the idioms?

Good job!

Were you able to give the meaning of these idioms?

GREAT!
You may proceed to the next activity.

One of the fascinating things about the English language is that common words can be used with
other words to mean something completely different. These special phrases are called idiomatic
expressions.
Filipinos are fond of using flowery words. Instead of saying “ I saw a man beaten rudely,” we
sometimes prefer to say “I saw a man beaten black and blue” to add a little drama to the statement.
An idiomatic expression conveys a meaning different from its individual words. Neither can the
idiom be readily analyzed from its grammatical construction.
Although idioms cannot be explained by the strict rules of grammar, their long-continued, general
use has given them recognition.
Idiomatic expressions give force, color and vividness to our language. We use idiomatic
expressions to make our speech and writing more interesting. Often, we can get meaning of an idiomatic
expression from context.

Study the following italicized expressions and their meanings.

1. The birds and animals felt down in the dumps because of the destruction of the forest. (depressed)
2. The woodcutter turned down their suggestions. (refused, denied)
3. Conservationist keep an eye on loggers. (watch carefully)
4. Sometimes the protectors turn up too late. (appear, arrive)
5. Often, conservationist and loggers do not get along with each other. (live harmoniously together)
