DISCUSSION
2.1 Understanding Conditional Sentence

In indonesian, the conditional sentence is a sentence of presupposition, it can also be

called a conditional sentence, which might occur if the conditions are met.

Conditional sentence has two parts, namely if-clause and playing clause. See the
following sentence:

“If I study hard, I will pass the exam.”

(Jika saya belajar dengan giat, saya akan lulus ujian.)

 If I study hard adalah if-clause, dan

 I will pass the exam adalah main clause.

Pola/Rumus Conditional Sentence

2.2 The following is the pattern/ conditional formula of sentence types 1, 2, and 3:

Tipe If-clause Main Clause

conditional sentence
Tipe 1 If+present ...will+infinitive
simple I will pass the exam.
If I study hard,
Tipe 2 If+past simple ...would+infinitive
If I studied hard, I would pass the exam.

Tipe 3 If+past perfect ...would+have+past

If I had studied hard, participle
I would have passed the exam.
The position of if-clause and main clause it can be reserved and does not change its
meaning, for example:

“If I study hard, I will pass the exam.”

“I will pass the exam if I study hard.”

Complete explanation of 3 types of conditional sentence

The following is a complete explanation of conditional sentences types 1, 2 and 3.

5
Conditional Sentence Tipe 1

Conditional sentence type 1 is used to refer to things that might occur in the future where
the situation is real. In this type, if conditions are met, then the possibility can still occur.

2.3 Some examples of conditional sentence tipe 1:

If-clause Main clause

If+present ... will+infinitive
simple
If it rains, I will stay at
home.
If you invite me, I will come to
your party,
If he gives her she will be happy.
chocolate,
If it doesn't rain, we will go to the
library.

Conditional Sentence Tipe 2

Conditional sentence type 2 is used for: first, talking about things in the future that might
not happen (such as endangering dreams for example) example:

If I got scholarship, I would continue my study in London.

(but probably I will not get the scholarship.)

Seandainya saya mendapatkan beasiswa, saya akan melanjutkan kuliah di London.

(tapi mungkin saya tidak mendapatkan beasiswa itu.)

Second, to talk about things that are happening in the present, which are imposibble.

If I were you, I would stop smoking.

(but I cannot be you.) Mustahil bagi saya untuk menjadi kamu.

The following is an example of conditional sentence type 2:

6
If-clause Main clause
If+past simple ... would+infinitive
If I had time, I would go with you.
If she met her She would be happy.
mother,
If I were 25, I would get married.
If I were you, I would continue my
study.

Conditional Sentence Tipe 3

Conditional sentence type 3 is used to describe past situations that do not occur and
endanger the outcome of the situation. This type reveals the opposite of the facts faced.
See the following example:

If I had finished my study, I would have worked at big company.

(but I didn’t finish my study and I didn’t work at big company.)

Jika dulu saya menyelesaikan kuliah saya, saya akan bekerja di perusahaan besar.
Tapi faktanya saya tidak menyelesaikan kuliah saya, dan saya tidak bekerja di
perusahaan besar.

Another example of conditional sentence type 3:

If-clause Main clause

If+past perfect ... would+have+past participle
If I had locked the car, the thief would not have stolen
my car.
If I had known about your I would have offered help.
problem,
If my parents had been in I would have visited them
Bandung, everyday.
If she hadn't taken the she wouldn't have gotten the
course, scholarship.
If she hadn’t taken the course, she wouldn’t have gotten the scholarship.
(but she took the course and she got the scholarship.)

 If I had locked the car, the thief wouldn’t have stolen my car.
 Had I locked the car, the thief wouldn’t have stolen my car.

Another example:

 If my parents had been in Bandung, I would have visited them everyday.

 Had my parents been in Bandung, I would have visited them everyday.
