DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION-NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF PASAY CITY
MODULE FRONT OFFICE SERVICES 7/8
First Quarter /Week /Day
A. Objectives:
● Identify hazards and risks under physical and chemical hazards
B. Lesson 4: Practice Occupational Health and Safety
LO1. Identify hazards and risks
Physical Hazards are factors or conditions within the environment that can harm your
health. It can be both natural and human made elements. They are typically easiest to spot but,
sadly, too often overlooked because of familiarity.
Types of physical hazards
● body stressing ● frayed electrical cords
● confined spaces ● working from ladders
● electricity ● spills
● heat ● trips
● heights ● unguarded machinery
● constant loud noise ● vibrations
● heat and cold ● ultra violet radiation
How to prevent physical hazards
● Control the physical hazards by storing products carefully
● Substitution- avoid the health hazards by using safer products
● Minimize/ Reduce your exposure by wearing PPE and ventilating the area
Chemical Hazards - a hazardous chemical can be a solid, liquid or gas. It can be a pure
substance consisting of one ingredients, or a mixture of substances. It can harm the health of a
person who is exposed to it.
How Chemicals Enter the Body?
1. Ingestion- chemicals may be swallowed accidentally if foods (or hands) are contaminated.
2. Inhalation - chemicals in the air are breathed in through the mouth or nose.
3. Absorption – the chemicals soak through skin.
4. Injection – it can occur when a sharp object (needle) punctures the skin and injects a
chemical (or virus) directly to blood stream.
Examples of chemical hazards that a person may be exposed;
— Liquids like cleaning products, disinfecting solutions
Effects of Chemical Hazards
● Lung diseases ● Skin irritation
● Difficulty in breathing ● Cancer
● Allergy ● Occupational Asthma

Let’s Do this!
Activity 1. True or False
Directions: Write TRUE if the stamen is correct, FALSE if not.
_______________1. A chemical can be a hazard by virtue of its intrinsic properties it can cause
harm or danger to humans, property or environment.
_____________2. Physical hazard is a naturally occurring process that has the potential to
create loss or damage.
_____________3. Physical hazards are environmental factors that can harm an employee
without necessarily touching them.
_____________4. Chemicals can affect skin by contact.
_____________5. Chemicals can also enter our body either through the inhalation or digestive
system.
Activity 2. Enumeration
Directions: List down at least five (5) examples of physical hazards.

Evaluation
Directions: The following are possible causes of risks and hazards tell whether if it is
PHYSICAL, BIOLOGICAL, PSYCHOSOCIAL, ERGONOMIC OR CHEMICAL.
_______________1. Mixing incompatible disinfectant and detergents.
_______________2. Aggressive colleagues.
_______________3. Dealing with angry or stressed family member of the patient.
_______________4. Wet slippery surfaces.
_______________5. Over exertion from lifting, transferring or repositioning patients.
_______________6. Contact with contaminated surface or equipment.
_______________7. Adopting sustained awkward postures.
_______________8. Inhalation of airborne droplets of respiratory secretions spreads by
coughing.
______________9. Medications or excreted, unmetabolised drugs in patient’s urine or faeces.
_____________10. Direct contact with infected blood or body fluids via needle stick or sharps\
injury.
Let’s Remember!
Physical hazard will cause injury risks on our body. This category includes the
hazards from working in confined spaces, caught in explosions, hurt by collapsing machinery,
falling from heights and tripping from obstacles.
Chemical hazard is a substance that can cause harm, primarily to people.
Chemical can affect the skin by contact or the body either the digestive system or through the
lungs if air is contaminate with chemical, vapors, mist or dust.
