OBJECTIVES:

1. analyzes elements and principles of art in the production of one’s arts and crafts inspired
by the arts of Luzon (highlands and lowlands)

2. identifies characteristics of arts and crafts in specific areas in Luzon (e.g., papier mâché
[taka] from Paete, Ifugao wood sculptures [bul’ul], Cordillera jewelry and pottery, tattoo,
and Ilocos weaving and pottery [burnay], etc.)

3. reflects on and derive the mood, idea, or message emanating from


selected artifacts and art objects
4. appreciates the artifacts and art objects in terms of their uses and their
distinct use of art elements and principles

5. incorporates the design, form, and spirit of the highland/lowland artifact


and object in one’s creation

6. traces the external (foreign) and internal (indigenous) influences reflected


in the design of an artwork and in the making of a craft or artifact

7. creates crafts that can be locally assembled with local materials, guided
by local traditional techniques (e.g., habi, lilip, etc).

8. Discusses the elements from traditions/history of a community for one’s artwork

The term folk art means- art made by people who have had no art instruction, and often
little formal education. Art is generally considered to be “folk art” when it is the work of
untrained artists working in the rural areas.
It could be paintings, carvings, furniture, textiles, metal works, masks, artifacts and
decorative arts made by people using traditional techniques handed down to them through the
generations.
Folk artists learn by just watching their elders or by becoming apprentice in a craft. Some
folk arts are simple, undecorated craftwork created for everyday use.
Folk art is a part of our country’s cultural heritage. It speaks of our national symbols that
represent the country as well.
It also shows our country’s national identity and national unity. Folk art is identified
through its secrecy of style, expression of sensitivity for art and beauty by a certain group
consisting of the artist and the immediate audience.

Arts and crafts are important means of expression, which communicates views, ideas and
feelings though the use of skill and imagination. These are important parts of our daily lives and
can be found everywhere.

The sculptures and architectures of Luzon reveal many aspects of the people’s culture, traditions
and history. The elements and principles of art of these fascinating arts and crafts will lead you to
understand the rich culture and tradition of the Philippines that is handed down from generation to
generation.

Architecture:

Ilocos- This characterized by Spanish architecture and


popular beaches. It is comprised of the provinces of
Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan.

Vigan, considered as the “ Intramuros of the North”,


retains the Spanish colonial architecture along its
narrow and cobble-stoned streets known as Calle
Crisologo.

traditional wooden looms. The different designs represent different meanings: the dizzying
“ binakol” weave represents the waves of the sea. They believe that this design protects
them from bad spirits.

Pottery:

Burnay is an unglazed earthen jar with


small opening. I is used for storage for
water and rice grains and as container for
salt, brown sugar, basi and bagoong.

PANGASINAN:

The province is located in and is the southernmost province of Ilocos region. The
provincial capital is Lingayen.

Pangasinan has extensive areas devoted to salt making and aquaculture along the coasts of
Lingayen Gulf and South China Sea.

Pangasinan is famous for the Hundred


Islands National Park. This is the marine park
located off coast of Alaminos City in the
Lingayen Gulf and is composed of some 123
islands , most of which are quite small and
uninhabited.

The arts and crafts of Pangasinan include the smoothly woven Bolinao mats made from
Buri or Raffia leaves and the bamboo crafts ( baskets, furniture) of San Carlos

LA UNION:

It is the province of the


Philippines located in the Ilocos
Region whose capital is San
Fernando City.

La Union is known for its soft


broom industry.

ARTS 7: LESSON 2: THE FOLK ARTS OF CORDILLERA ADMINISTRATIVE REGION

The Cordillera Region of the Philippines is a region consists of the provinces of Abra,
Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province Apayao, Baguio City. Baguio City is the

regional center. The Cordillera Region encompasses most of the areas within the
Cordillera nCentral mountain range of Luzon . The largest range in the country.

ABRA:

The Tingguians weave textiles for clothes and


blankets. They are noted for their white trextiles
with horizontal stripes found in the edges. Bankudo-
wrap around skirt, Balwasi- female blouse.

BENGUET:
Panagbenga festival is a
month long annual flower
3 festival occurring in
Baguio, the summer capital
of the Philippines. The
term is of Malayo
Polynesian origin, meaning
“ season of blooming”. The
festival is held during the
month of February.

The Ibaloi and Kankana-ey
occupies the Southeast of
Benguet. The Ibaloys ar
predominantly farmers.

IFUGAO:

Ifugaos reside in the mountainous northern portion of the islands of Luzon.

Sculpture:
The bul’ul is a wooden sculpture that
represents the rice granary spirits. It is used in
ritual that are performed to call the ancestors to
protect their rice fields from pestilence and to ask
for an abundant harvest.
It is carved wooden human figure with
simplified forms. It is dipped in the blood of pigs
during the rituals called tunod. Which means “
planting the seedlings in the soil”.
The bul’ul is usually made of narra, which
signifies wealth, happiness and well-being to the
Ifugao.

The Ifugaos amulets are called lingling-o or


dinumug. These are made of jade, gold, copper,
bronze, stone and other materials. These are
fertility symbols worn around the neck.

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE:
Mt. Province is bounded on the north by Kalinga, on the south of Ifugao, southwest by
Benguet, and on the west of Abra and Ilocos.

Lang-ay Festival is wine and cultural festival to


celebrate the Mt. Province Foundation Day. It is week
long celebration culminating on the 7th of April.

Textile:

Mountain Province is known for their burial cloth for


the kadangyan or rich people.

ARTS 7: LESSON 3: THE FOLK ARTS OF CAGAYAN VALLEY

Cagayan Valley is the northern part of Luzon. It is composed of provinces of Batanes, Cagayan,
Isabela and Nueva Viscaya.

BATANES:
The people of Batanes are the Ivatans. Since Batanes is most
frequently visited by typhoons the people there have to adapt to their
place’s situation. They build their stone houses made of limestone.

Ivatan women usually wear a headgear called vakul. It is woven


from abaca fiber or from a palm similar to coconut. The main

CAGAYAN:

The province of Cagayan is known for their beautiful tourist spots and religious spots. The
Lady of Plat Church and the Calvary Hills are beautiful creation of arts. Religious engrave,
sculptures, and other religious items were used to teach religion to people.

ISABELA:
The Aetas in Isabela and Cagayan usually hunt for their foods. They make arrows with a
series of barbs below the arrow heads to prevent the wounded animal from easily shaking off the
arrow.

NUEVA VIZCAYA:
Nueva Vizcaya is a mountainous province which is near Benguet, Ifugao and Quirino.
This province is known for their Bakwat.

It is a woven belt used by mothers after giving


birth. Gaddang weavers make this white woven
cloth and they put beads on it as its accent. The
beadwork is placed at the middle part of the cloth
with patterns of rivers and mountains.
Gaddang are popular for their clothing and
accessories accented with yellow, white and black
beads decoration.

Art Activity:
Draw and design your own Bakwat.

Assignment:
Research the history of Calvary Hills.

ARTS 7: LESSON 4: THE FOLK ARTS OF CENTRAL LUZON 10

Central Luzon is composed of the provinces of Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales, Tarlac, Nueva
Ecija and Bataan. Each province shows unique folk arts and crafts.

BULACAN:
Bulacan is known for its artistically made
bamboo arches or singkaban during fiesta and other
special occasion. Bamboo chairs, tables and
cabinets are also the sources of livelihood of the
artistic people of Bulacan. Weaving buntal hat is
another skill of the people specially the women of
Bulacan.

Bocaue is known in manufacturing firecrackers


of different kinds.

PAMPANGA:
Pampanga is known for the beautiful giant lanterns that you see during Christmas. San
Fernando, Pampanga is known for these lanterns.

Pampanga is also known for its sculpture and woodcarving .Betis is the furniture and
woodcarving capital of Pampanga. Juan C. Flores is the teacher of young carvers in Pampanga.
His generosity and skills spread by word of mouth and many aspiring carvers from Pampanga and
other provinces in Luzon came to seek his help.

ZAMBALES:
It is in Zambales where you can find Mt.
Pinatubo and also the Aetas. These natives create
a folk arts out of the local materials found in the
mountain such as bamboo and rattan. They make
bamboo flutes, baskets and other products out of
bamboo and rattan.

Zambales is also the hometown of President


Ramon Magsaysay.

Tarlac is home to the Luisita Land and Industrial Park, a self -contained community.
Tarlac City, the Provincial Capital, and though tourism has
not really been exploited, Tarlac City does have some great
historical areas, and is the home of Tarlac State University.
The city is now one of the progressive cities of the
Philippines. Some of the tourist sites located in Tarlac City
includes the Capital Building which has an early 20th Century
design was built in 1906; in the shadows of the Capital
Building lies the Maria Cristina Park, named after 1952 Miss
Philippines, Maria Cristina Galang, and the Museo de Tarlac;
to the north on Romulo Boulevard lies the Carlos P. Romulo
Library and Museum and Tarlac State University; on Tanedo
Street lies the San Sebastian Cathedral where Philippine Hero,
Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino, laid in state after his
assassination August 21, 1983, sparking the People Power
Revolution.

NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION:
The National Capital Region is the
capital of the Philippines. Metro Manila
includes Calookan City, Las Piñas City,
Makati City, Malabon City,
Mandaluyong City, Muntinlupa City,
Manila City, Marikina City, Navotas City,
Parañaque City, Pasay City, Pasig City,
Pateros, Quezon City, San Juan City ,
Taguig City, Valenzuela City.

Metro Manila is composed of almost


all the cultural groups of the Philippines.
The primary language used is tagalog with
English as the secondary language.

CALOOCAN CITY:
The main landmark of the city is the
Bonifacio monument located at the intersection of Rizal Avenue and EDSA.

Las Piñas City:


Las Piñas is known as one of the cleanest cities in Metro Manila and has also recently
achieved a status of the “ MOST COMPETITIVE CITY” in the country.
The Saint Joseph Parish, otherwise known as the Las
Piñas Church or Bamboo Organ Church, is a parish church in

Las Piñas, just south of the city of Manila in the Philippines. The church is renowned to house the
Bamboo Organ, a pipe organ made mostly with bamboo pipes.
CITY OF MANILA:
Lungsod ng Maynila is the capital of the Philippines.
The city’s name was derived from a flowering mangrove plant” the nilad” that grew on the
shores of the bay at the time, thus, of the name Maynilad.

MAKATI CITY:
The city is referred to as the “ Financial Capital” and “Wall Street” of the Philippines since
Makati is the headquarters of various key companies and work offices.

Malabon is a commercial fishing center for Manila,
known for “ bagoong” (fish paste) production.

MANDALUYONG CITY:
The city derived its name from tagalog terms” mga meaning many” and daluy means flowing

The very unique Lavandero festival in Mandaluyong focuses


on the city's ancient tradition of washing clothes in the once
clean and clear waters of the Pasig river

Marikina City is known as the “ Shoe Capital of the
Philippines or Shoe Capital of Asia notably for its shoe
industry.
A large pair of shoes that were created by the
shoemakers in the city was recently recognized by the
Guinness Books of Records.

NAVOTAS CITY:

Navotas was dubbed as the “ Fishing Capital of the


Philippines”,with 70% of its population deriving their
livelihood directly or indirectly from fishing and its related
industries like fish trading.

QUEZON CITY:
Quezon City held status as the official capital until 1976 when a presidential decree was
issued to reinstate and designate Manila as the capital and Metro Manila as the seat of
government. It is the largest city in terms of population and land area in Metro Manila, the
National Capital Region of the Philippines.
The People Power Monument is a sculpture of towering
people commemorating the People Power Revolution of 1986
located on the corner of EDSA and White Plains Avenue in
Brgy. Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

PARAÑAQUE CITY: 18
Parañaque, city, central Luzon, Philippines, on the southeastern shore of Manila Bay. Its
site was occupied by small vegetable farms until the mid-20th century, when expanding
urbanization transformed the town into a southern suburb of Manila. The Manila International

Airport to the east occupies Nichols Field, a former U.S. air base. Parañaque has long been noted
for intricate hand embroidery, which has continued as a household industry. Fishing from rafts
mounted with salambaos (large nets) is an important activity. The Manila Bay Beach Resort,
a national park, is located there.

PASIG CITY:
Pasig is one of the highly urbanized cities of Metro Manila in the Philippines.Pasig is
primarily residential and industrial, but has been becoming increasingly commercial in these
recent years.
Pasig City is a large district with a mix of offices and upscale housing, popular for mall
complexes in and around the Ortigas Center area. Hip eateries serving modern Filipino fare cluster
in Kapitolyo village, and parks like Greenfield District host weekend markets with local food and

ARTS 7: Lesson 5: The Folk Arts of CALABARZON and Bicol Region
CALABARZON is one of the region of the Philippines. It is designated as Region IV-A
and its regional center is Calamba City in Laguna. The region is composed of five provinces
namely: Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon. The region is also more formally known as
Southern Mainland Tagalog.
Bicol Region is known as Region V located at the Southeastern end of Luzon. Agriculture
and fishing is the main source of living in the provinces. The regions are primary crops are
coconuts, rice, abaca, and corn. Gold mining and jewelry production is also known in the
province.

CAVITE:
In Kawit, Cavite, the people of celebrate an important tradition every Christmas season called
Tinis. In this tradition, they narrate the story how St. Joseph and Morther Mary found a place to
give birth to Jesus.
Karakol dancing is another tradition of Caviteños. This is part of their fiesta celebration.

BATANGAS:
Batangas, officially the Province of Batangas, is a province in the Philippines located in the
Calabarzon region in Luzon. Its capital is the city of Batangas and is bordered by the provinces of
Cavite and Laguna to the north, and Quezon to the east.

RIZAL:

The province was named after the countrys national hero, Jose Rizal.
Giant puppets during the Higantes Festival in Angono, Rizal attract
the crowd. Anfono is the hometown of our national artist: Carlos “
botong” Francisco.

QUEZON:
The province named after Manuel L. Quezon, the second President of the Philippines and its
capital is Lucena City.

Bicol is famous for their crafts made from


abaca and raffia. They have native bags, slippers, coin purse, fan, woven trays, place mats, key
chains, and others.
