INTRODUCTION

2. INTRODUCTION

Context

This training document contains the information

required to search, read, understand and use the
entire Renault Trucks workshop after-sales
documentation, for the DXi generation commercial
vehicle range and the Master range.

In the current context of updating the whole range of

vehicles, it is essential to :

- be familiar with all the sources of information

made available by the manufacturer
- have access to all the sources of information,
know how to carry out precise searches and
use the results
- be able to inform yourself continuously in order
to adapt your action to each breakdown and
each vehicle that you take in charge
- improve the efficiency of logical diagnostic
reasoning, in other words reduce the time
spent on diagnosis

A requirement for logical diagnostic reasoning

Logical diagnostic reasoning is a method enabling you to use all your knowledge and
abilities rationally in order to determine the origin of a breakdown.

In the stages of this method, you can see that it is essential to have access to the
after-sales documentation to be efficient.

4 780S-ENG-1-C1

Document de formation sans mise à jour Consulter le manuel de réparation

INTRODUCTION

Simplified example of logical reasoning :

Phase 1 : The current situation – note down the symptoms.

Phase 2 : Get the information – confirm the symptoms – known failure – other
information available on the conditions in which the symptom appears
Phase 3 : Make it your job.
Be familiar with the operation of the system that has failed.
Phase 4 : Produce hypotheses and plan the intervention.
Phase 5 : Intervention, Checks
Phase 6 : Repairs - restore failed system to working condition – test.

Scope of this document

Only the applications necessary for diagnostic and repair operations in the workshop
are covered here:

- RTO. Renault Trucks Online is the portal for access to the Renault Trucks
after-sales computer applications. It is important to know how to navigate in
the system in order to find the right information.

- The workshop repair manuals (MR) : navigation in the online version, reading
and using the wiring diagrams, reading and using the pneumatic diagrams.

- Technical documents: navigation in the online system and use of the notes.

- Fault codes: searching on the basis of vehicle fault codes, and using the
diagnostic manual.

- Fleet: the vehicle file

RENAULT TRUCKS ONLINE PORTAL

3. RENAULT TRUCKS ONLINE PORTAL - RTO

This is the after-sales technical information distribution tool of the Renault Trucks
network.

Renault Trucks Online is accessible via the Internet : www.renault-trucks.com

It will replace the paper version of the after-sales documentation as a whole. This
portal is progressively taking over from the Renault Trucks Links portal which was
accessible via Dealernet (internal network) & DCS Online (internet).

Renault Trucks Online (RTO) replaces the Renault Trucks Links portal : from the end
of 2007 for France, and progressively for the whole world during 2008.

The applications which can be accessed are the same as in Renault Trucks Links. In
the following chapters we will detail the Optidoc applications, i.e. the Workshop
manuals, fault codes, Technical Notes & the fleet file.

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

4. VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

Before any search, it is important to be sure of the identification of the vehicle.

This stage is of primary significance for finding the document or the piece of
information that you are searching for in Optidoc.

Location of ranges of identification

You will find these indications in the service handbook (chapter E1-1) and in the
bodybuilder assembly guide (chapter: INTRODUCTION 3.1.).

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

V.I.N. number (Vehicle Identification Number)

This is the official and legal record number of the vehicle.

It has 17 characters, basically arranged as follows:
- the first 3 characters (VF6) designate the manufacturer : Renault Trucks.
- the next 2 characters identify the vehicle family (for example, 17 for Magnum)
- the last 6 digits are the serial number.

Manufacturing number (FAB)

This has 10 characters.

The first 4 characters identify the type of vehicle, called the family.
The first 2 digits are as indication of the range (Premium, for example) and the next 2
characters give the configuration (4x2 tractor, for example).

Attention : the serial number (the last 6 characters) is very often different from the
serial number that you read in the V.I.N. number,

CAM plate

Basically, this tells you the vehicle’s date of manufacturing.

The date is in the form DDMY.
- DD : the day
- M : the month (A for January, B for February …)
- Y : the unit of the year

Thus the 27th of February 2008 is written as : 27B8.

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

Comment

The identification of these vehicles in the DiagNG3 diagnostic tool is done with the
family code preceded by the letter J. Example : J17TE for a Magnum tractor.

Identification in the applications

Your search will always begin with an identification of the vehicle. The more precise
you are, the faster and more reliable your search will be.
The search by V.I.N. number is the only search that lets you navigate between
applications.
Searching by V.I.N. number is recommended in the workshop manuals and in the
fleet file.

13 780S-ENG-1-C1

Document de formation sans mise à jour Consulter le manuel de réparation

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

Search criteria in workshop manuals:

• V.I.N. number of vehicle (17 characters)
• manufacturing number (10 characters)
• registration number
• name of the range (for example Premium, Mascott …)
• family code (1 to 4 characters)
• unit concerned (engine, gearbox, alternator, etc.)
• number of workshop manual.

You can then choose the technical standard using the symbols. If you use a V.I.N.
number, it becomes possible to refine the technical standard to the 5 th position.

Reading the plates

Pagination

The global wiring diagram is

divided into plates, or folios.
The plate number can be found in the
bottom right-hand corner (here we
have plate 010).

Summary of diagrams

You have 2 ways to access the summary of the wiring diagram plates.
1st way : use the « Legend / Diagram » operation in the « Wiring diagram » chapter.

WIRING DIAGRAMS
2nd way to access the plate summary : use the Summary icon found in the bottom left-
hand corner of each plate.

The summary that appears lets you access the plates of the wiring diagram directly.

To do this, simply click on the number of the plate.

Cross references

An electric plate is organised inside a line + (power supply)

and a line – (earth).

The cross references on the left-hand side send you to a plate with a lower number.
The cross references on the right-hand side send you to a plate with a higher number.

WIRING DIAGRAMS

A folio cross reference can comprise two parts, with arrows.

These two parts are on the same line and contribute to the proper legibility of the diagram.

Components

Each device is identified by a

code.

Framed code = single device or

set of functions

Unframed code = sub-

assembly.
The code is then found inside the
component symbol.

The Terminals of the

connector of the device are also shown.

A variant or option is represented by a digit

inside a circle.

This symbol is placed on the 2 wires concerned.

A vehicle can have only one option from
several choices.

The thin line represents a wired part of the circuit, therefore located beyond the electric
junction box.

The thick line represents a part of the electric circuit located on the printed circuit of
the EJB (electric junction box).

This sign represents a terminal of the

connector located on the EJB (electric
junction box).

Example : XJC01-06:2

- XJC01-06 : number of the

connector
- 2 : number of the terminal of this
connector

For harnesses linked to the DXi13

engine, on one side we have an
alphanumeric identifier and on the
other a colour identifier.

Example : the blue/black wire (BL/SB)

connects to terminal 28 of connector EI
(EI:28).

FAULT CODE SEARCH

9. FAULT CODE SEARCH

The fault code Search system lets you consult the diagnostic manual from a vehicle fault
code.
This system replaces DXi Light, which was on DiagNG3, is no longer maintained and will
disappear.

Once the references of a fault code are provided, the system gives access to the diagnostic
manual. This manual describes the most relevant checking procedure for remedying this
fault code.

Use

Click on the title:

Search fault codes

Fill in the screen displayed:

Type of units : choose between : ALL, DXi, Mascott Euro 4, Allison

MID : the MID number of the unit concerned (see list at the end of the document)
All : choose PID, PPID, SID, PSID or All
FMI : the FMI code of the fault code
DTC : the fault code in the EOBD form – 1 letter, 4 digits
VIN : or FAB n° (manufacturing number), or registration number

By clicking on Search, you will obtain a list of the corresponding fault codes.
Select the fault code for your vehicle.

FAULT CODE SEARCH

If

there is no fault code

The fault code search software can also be used if there is no fault code and if necessary
when there is no DiagNG3 tool near the vehicle (for example, roadside repairs).

In this case you would use Workshop manual 70627.

This workshop manual enables you to find the fault code that usually describes the
symptom of vehicle that has broken down. This search is done :
- by ECU by means of their MID abbreviations (Message Identification Data)
- by vehicle component (PID, PPID, SID, PSID)
- by type of fault code (FMI )

First identify a fault code similar to the symptom you have found in the vehicle; you can then
start the search described in the previous paragraph.

This type of search will give you access to the check points and the values to check.

THE FLEET FILE

10. THE FLEET FILE

The fleet file contains the data for vehicles less than 10 years old.

The application lets you manage the date into service information for the fleet at your site
and to navigate to the Warranty, Consult applications, etc.

We are going to describe the search for information inside the fleet file, after identifying
the vehicle (see chapter 3 Identification).

The General information rubric in the LH menu enables you to find miscellaneous
information on the vehicle such as the identification of the selling dealer, the customer,
important dates, etc.

Identification inside the applications

Your search will always begin with an identification of the vehicle. The more precise
you are, the faster and more reliable your search will be.

Search criteria in workshop manuals:

• name of the range : Master
• unit concerned (engine, gearbox, alternator, etc.)
• number of workshop manual.

You can then choose the technical standard using the symbols :

Navigation in workshop manuals

After identifying the vehicle (see chapter 3. identification) let us now see how to refine
a search.

Technical standards

The Workshop manuals are classified by technical standards:

10. Chassis & suspensions,

20 Engine
30 Cutch & gearbox
40 Rear axle & front axle
50 Braking
60 Cab
70 Electrics

When selecting a technical standard, you will find the corresponding repair manual.

These manuals cannot be read online. You will need to download the complete
workshop manual, in a .pdf format.
Reading is carried out with a free to install Acrobat Reader software, usually already
present in any PC.

Reading wiring diagrams

As we saw in the previous chapter, the wiring diagram is an essential tool for
understanding the operation of Renault Trucks vehicles.

In this chapter, we give details of the operation of diagrams for Master light
commercial vehicles (Phases 1, 2 & 3).

To search for a Master wiring diagram, we

do a search by Range.
For our example, we will use the diagrams for a Master Phase 3, the most complete
diagrams.
The other search criteria (by VIN number,
for example) are not valid for Master.

The selection is made by date of manufacture of the vehicle.

This date of manufacture appears in the fleet file, under CAM.

For this example, we will choose a vehicle manufactured after 19 March 2007.

MASTER LCV

Search screen

It is from this screen that you will be able to find the wiring diagrams (in our example,
a Master Phase III manufactured after 19 March 2007).

The menu at the top left of the screen lets you refine your search.

By default, the CODE menu is active.

It displays the components in ascending order by their code number, as you can see
in the image above.

The COMPONENTS menu lets you choose the diagram of the component in
alphabetical order.

Using the CONNECTION menu, you can do your search in alphabetical order of
links (identification of wires).

The CONNECTION CODE menu displays the components in ascending order of link
codes (identification of wires).

Finally, the FUNCTION menu lets you do a search by the function of the
component you are searching for.
