Grade 10 Chemistry Weekly Plan: Hydrocarbons

This document provides an online weekly learning plan for 10th grade Chemistry students. It includes objectives, activities, and tasks for two lessons - one on hydrocarbons and structural isomerism, and another on fuels obtained from petroleum and properties of natural gas. The plan outlines learning objectives, activities like drawing structural formulas and relating topics to everyday examples. It provides guidance for teachers to describe objectives, complete tasks, answer student questions, and assign relevant past questions. Follow-up includes monitoring online classroom discussions and assignments.

Teacher Rafi Tasnim Rahman Subject Chemistry Grade 10

Dates Second week of July, 2020
Topic Lesson 1
17.2 - Hydrocarbons (Part 2)
Lesson 2
17.3 - Fuels

Resources Textbook: Essential Chemistry for Cambridge IGCSE (Roger Norris)

Key words Isomers, fossil fuels
Learning Lesson 1
Objectives - Describe and identify structural isomerism
- Learn naming of branched alkanes
Lesson 2
- Name the fuels: coal, natural gas and petroleum
- Describe the fuels obtained from petroleum
- Describe the properties of molecules within a fraction
- Name methane as the main constituent of natural gas
- State the use of hydrogen as a fuel

Learning activities Lesson 1

and tasks - Teacher to emphasise drawing of structural formulae to represent
isomers.
- Butane is to be used as the initial example and exercise extended to
other examples.
Lesson 2
- Awareness of the finite nature of fossil fuel supply and the role of
chemistry in the ‘search for solutions’ for alternative fuels and
alternative industrial feedstock.
- Awareness of the competing demand for hydrocarbons as fuels and as
raw materials for the petrochemical industry.
- Relate to use of methane in the home and in Bunsen burners.
