115 Excel Independent Assignment Instructions


**This document is for instruction ONLY and will not be submitted**
From the common/assignments/excel directory of the E 115 course locker, you should have copied the file
excelia_template.xlsx. If not, do so now!
Fill out and format the spreadsheet as requested and submit is as excelia_completed.xlsx.

A) Format the given Excel Spreadsheet to the following standards:

1. Bold all data column titles in the data table. The data table spans from A2 to H46.

2. Set all font to Times New Roman 11pt.

3. Add a fill color to every other row of the data table, which spans from A2 to H46. This color should not
extend past the last column or row of the data table.

4. Add your Name, Unity ID and Section Number underneath the data table. These should be in red and
bolded.

5. Add a dashed border around the Question/Answer section below the data table. Also, add a thick
border around the outside of the data table.

Please complete Sections B, C, and D in Excel. The questions in Sections B and C have been duplicated below
the data table in cells A52:A61.

B) Use an Excel function to find:

6. The average viewer rating of all shows watched.

7. Out of all of the shows watched, what is the earliest airing year?

8. The greatest number of seasons a show aired.

9. The total number of episodes watched by the TAs, assuming they finished each show once.

10. How many different shows were listed by the TAs?

C) Use an Excel conditional statement to find:
Note: No nesting of conditional statements should be used!

11. How many of the shows watched were exactly 30 minutes long?

12. If you were to watch one episode of each of the Dramas that the TAs watched, how much time would
you spend?

13. Whether a show is a Comedy that is still on the air. (Hints: You should auto-fill your answer down
Column I. You should not use an IF statement.)

14. Whether a show ran for longer than 6 seasons or had less than 20 episodes. (Hints: You should auto-fill
your answer down Column J. You should not use an IF statement.)

15. If a show is 45 minutes long, or longer, then it is “Too Long”, otherwise it’s “Just the Right Length”.
(Hint: You should auto-fill your answer down Column K.)

D) Graphing

Maybe there is a correlation between a shows' genre and how many seasons it airs? Use the summarized data
below the data table to graph this correlation and apply the requested formatting to the graph.

16. Create a column or bar graph below the data table where "Genre of Show" is your independent
variable and "Average Number of Seasons" is your dependent variable.

17. Include a title for your graph and provide X and Y axis labels. The title should be sized in 20 pt. Arial
font and your labels in 12 pt. Arial font. Bold the title and axis labels.

18. Add data labels to your graph and give your graph a border.
