Library Noise Control Device Proposal

The document describes implementing a solution to reduce noise levels in a university library. The proposed solution is to create devices that measure sound intensity on study tables, and alert staff when noise exceeds a threshold. To prototype this, the document outlines building a device, setting a noise limit, testing that it alerts correctly, and conducting a mock installation to ensure proper functioning. The result will be understanding how well the device works in practice and ability to optimize the noise threshold.

Design Thinking Phase 3: Implementation

The problem that I identified in my workspace, in my previous assignment is the disturbance

that students create in the library, which hampers the efficiency and productivity of the
students, who are genuinely doing their work. As observed by me, most students visit library
for passing the time, which they get during their breaks, so they talk and chat with each
other, which is very annoying. Some students try discuss their doubts with each other,
which also creates disturbance.

The best solution to this problem, according to me, is to create a device which measures the
sound intensity, which the students sitting on a particular desk are making. This device,
should be installed on each table, and it should provide signal to the reception, in case the
sound intensity measured by it, exceeds a certain threshold value. After being notified about
the sound intensity, the caretakers of the library should take action, and refrain the students
from making noise. This idea is quite innovative, since it solves the problem effectively,
without any offending the students. It will be the best solution, since there is not quite
another great solution to the problem, since it is cost effective, time saving, and an
impactful solution.

Creating a prototype for this idea, would require creating the device, and then testing it. The
next step is to set a limit at which, the device would send signals to the reception. Once the
limit has been set, we need to test the device, whether it really does its job or not. After
doing so, we might conduct a mock drill or survey, wherein we install the device on the
desks of the library, and check for its functioning. This way, we can successfully build the
prototype for our device. The result of using this prototype will be that we will get a clear
idea of the functioning of the device, and we can adjust its threshold limit accordingly.
