10-ISAIAH
The Only One
There was a verse in the bible that a man may have a lot of companions, but in times of darkness
there’s only one that is closer than a brother. People say I have a lot of friends, that I was outgoing and
everyone knows me but that’s just one page of the story.
During my elementary days, I was an honor student who made sure everyone was her friend. I also
liked having close relationships with my teachers. One of which is Ma’am Joy Cabbigat, our teacher in
MAPEH or Music, Arts, P.E. and Health. She’s very playful, beautiful and considerate. Her humor is one
of a kind and she treats her students kindly and fairly. She was like a mother to me and I can never
forget what she did for me.
It was a usual day on the month of June when we were having a discussion in Hekasi. When our
teacher was done with the topic, he started to tell us about our costumes on the upcoming program. He
made a mistake of saying “bootie” instead of “bowtie.” A lot of my classmates started laughing,
including my seatmate. She had pale skin and so her face got so red that I can’t stop myself from
laughing. I shook my head at her actions and faced the board. To my surprise, our teacher was staring at
me with an enraged expression. I was worried that he might think that I was laughing at him. Just as I
expected, he called my name and kept insulting me. Saying that I don’t make mistakes and I’m so
perfect that I laugh at other’s imperfections. It was hard that I couldn’t even say anything because he
might get offended even more. So I kept quiet and just listened to his complaints. When the bell rang, I
felt like my classmates looked at me differently. They gazed at me with an expression I couldn’t
understand. Even my friends didn’t approach me or checked if I was okay. All the other teachers call me
with uncertainty whenever I recite.
That afternoon, when school was over, I approached teacher Joy. She was concentrated on her
subject plan, her short black hair tied back. I explained what happened to her and she was the only one
who bravely said that she knew me well and she knew that I couldn’t have done that. She believed in me
when I stopped believing in myself. She didn’t make me feel alone and even cheered me up when I was
about to give up. Her smile was so sincere that I knew she meant every word she said. She was careful
with her words and her eyes showed so much kindness that it made me so happy.
From that day on, I felt like she was my best friend. I discovered a lot of new things about her. She
loves music and travelling, and she hates to disappoint. It turns out that we both like sweets and making
artworks. She taught me how to put effort in everything I do. She changed me in so many ways that
made me who I am today.
