SECTION 323113 – ATHLETIC FIELD CHAIN LINK FENCING
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Furnish labor, materials, equipment, facilities, transportation and services for chain link fencing
and related work as shown on drawings and includes, but is not necessarily limited to:
1. New vinyl coated chain link fencing and gates.
2. Concrete associated with chain link fencing installation.
3. Windscreens
1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Materials and procedures for chain link fencing and gates shall conform to the appropriate
sections of the standard specifications, unless otherwise noted on the drawings or in these
specifications.
B. Concrete used for installation and for mow curbs associated with chain link fencing shall
conform to all requirements for section 321313.
1.3 PRODUCTS
A. Steel Chain-Link Fence Fabric:
Fabricated in one-piece widths for fencing in heights as indicated on Drawings to comply with
Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI) “Product Manual” and with requirements
indicated below:
1. Mesh and wire size: 9-gage, 5 cm (2 inch) mesh, Class 2A or 2B, (ASTM F 668)
2. Selvage: knuckled at one selvage and twisted at the other.
B. Posts and Framing:
1. Round member pipe shall be SS-40 Steel Pipe complying with ASTM F1043-00. Sizes
are given in actual outside diameter (OD) to the nearest thousandth of centimeter.
Round fence posts and rails are often referred to in ASTM standard specifications by
nominal pipe sizes (NPS) or equivalents trade sizes in centimeters. The following
indicates these equivalents all measured in inches (centimeters):

2. Top and Bottom Rail: Manufacturer’s longest lengths with sedged-end or expansion type
coupling, approximately 15 cm (6 inches) long for joining. Provide rail ends or other
means for attaching top rail securely to each gate corner, pull and end post.
3. Steel Posts for Fabric Heights over 2 m (6 feet) high.
a. Round End, Corner and Pull Posts: 10 cm (4 inch) OD steel pipe.
b. Over 2 m: 10 cm (4 inch) OD pipe weighing at least 9.76 kilo/meter (6.56 pounds per
foot).
c. Swing Gate Posts:
1). Up to 1.2 m (4-feet) wide gate: 7.62 cm (2.875-inch) diameter OD steel pipe.
2). Over 1.2 m (4-feet) wide gate: 10 cm (4-inch) diameter OD steel pipe.
4. Gate Frames: 5.08 cm (1.90-inch) diameter OD steel pipe.
C. Fittings and Accessories:
1. Material: Comply with ASTM F1043-00 for SS040 galvanized steel fence tubing.
2. Steel and Iron: Unless specified otherwise, hot-dip galvanized pressed steel or cast-iron
fence fittings and accessories with at least 1.2 oz. Zinc per sq. ft. as determined by ASTM
A-90.
3. Post and Line Caps: Provide weather tight closure cap for each post. Provide line post
caps with loop to receive tension wire or top rail.
4. Post Brace Assembly: Manufacturer’s standard adjustable brace. Use material specified
below for brace, and truss to line posts with 9.5 mm (3/8-inch-diameter) rod and
adjustable tightener. Provide manufacturer’s standard galvanized-steel, or cast-iron:
Round steel: 4.13 cm (1.660-inch) diameter OD steel pipe.
5. Tension or Stretcher Bars: Provide one bar for each gate and end post, and two for each
corner and pull post, except where fabric is integrally woven into the post.
6. Tension and Brace Bands: 2 cm (¾ inch) wide minimum hot-dip galvanized steel.
a. Tension Bands: 1.8 mm (0.074-inch) thick (14 gage) minimum.
b. Tension Brace Bands: 2.67 mm (0.105-inch) thick (12 gage) minimum.
7. Tension Wires: 9 gage PVC coated, Class 2A or 2B, extruded coating conforming to
ASTM F1664.
a. Coating Type I aluminum with a minimum coating weight of 0.40 oz. per sq. ft as de-
termined by ASTM A 428.
b. Class 2, with a minimum coating weight of 1.20 oz/ per sq. ft of uncoated wire sur-
face.
8. Tie Wires: 2.67 mm (0.106-inch) diameter (12 gauge) galvanized steel with zinc coating
according to ASTM A641, Class 3 of 3.75 mm (0.148 inch) diameter (9 gauge) aluminum
wire alloy 1350-H19 or equal, to match fabric wire.
9. Hardware:
a. Rolling Gates: Pipe tracks, pipe track brackets, rear wheels, double wheel carriers
and latch for padlock.

b. Drop rod latch, gatekeeper, and standard industrial butt hinge at double gates 2.43 m
(8-feet) and wider with 1-½ pairs. Standard male/female strap hinge for smaller
gates.
c. Accessible single gate: Uni-Latch UL-1012 (Hoover Fence Co. or equal) welded
spring-loaded action with KantSlam hydraulic gate closer and standard male/female
strap hinge.
d. Padlocks: System to match owners keying schedule. Provide one (1) padlock per
gate opening.
10. Wind Screen: Provide vinyl-coated polyester windscreen, full height, with center tie down
lacing lip, extra heavy duty 6-ply 4 cm wide reinforced boarder, brass grommets spaced
every 45 cm, and two rows of reinforced air vents every 3 m centered between the top
and bottom rails. Wind screen shall come in continuous panels not to exceed 18 m in
length.
1.4 INSTALLATION
A. Fences and gates shall be installed in accordance with standard specifications of the Chain
Link Institution
B. Install post into concrete as detailed on contract documents
C. Space posts at a maximum of 3 meters on center
D. Locate sleeves in concrete for gatekeeper for gate in its full open position.
E. Fence Bottom: Install fence mesh with bottom tension wires 5 cm from top of finished grade or
elevation of mow curb beneath fencing.
F. Install wind screen using self locking tie wraps around entire perimeter of the screen and poly
twine for center tie down lacing lip. Install steel “S” hooks along the bottom of the wind screen.
