KALHAN’S RAJATARANGINI

Introduction-

Indian civilization is one of the oldest civilization in the world, as compare to


Chinese and Greek civilization. From ancient period India has faced many ups and downs it
resulted to bigger gaps in the study of ancient Historiography. Beside this ancient Indian
Historiography made a special position in the glorious history of world. Undoubtly there had
been a large who had contributed tremendously to the development of ancient Indian
Historiography. Following them Kalhana is a well significant historian. Of twelfth century
A.D. He was the first historian of ancient India who produced his work on the pattern of
modern Historiography.His great valuable work is “Rajatarangini” it means the river of king
Kashmir and he took to complete his work. In this book Kalhana describe about the general
history of Kashmir. Rajatarangini is a great Sanskrit literary work and is the work of about
8000 highly polished Sanskrit ures . In this book Kalhana gave a details account of the
different dynasty of Kashmir chronology. His Rajatarangini has divided into 8 parts called as
Tarang (waves) and every part unique themselves and describe about the different king of
Kashmir. The Rajatarangini provides the earliest source on Kashmir that can be labelled as a
“historical” text on this region. Although inaccurate in its chronology , the book still provides
an invaluable source of information about early Kashmir and neighbours in the north eastern
part of Indian subcontinent and has been widely referenced by later historian an
ethnographers.
