GIVEN DATA-
Model - KTM DUKE 200

KTM DUKE 200
Wheel Base-1367mm
Dry weight-151 kg
Rear suspension- WP-Monoshock
Type-Coil Spring
Wire diameter-15
Mean coil diameter-90
Mass of the Engine- 60kg
Distance between engine and suspension- 40 cm
ASSUME DATA:
Weight of TWO person-(70+70) kg=140kg
Modulus of rigidity(G)-77200 N/mm2(Stainless steel)
Deflection – 40mm
Design procedure:
• Calculate the helical compression spring subjected to a maximum
force(P)
• Spring index
• Calculate the Number of Coils
• Calculate the Various Length
• Calculate the Spring Rate
• Actual deflection
• Calculate the Pitch

CALCULATONS:
According to the data of sports bike, firstly we rearrange all the forces
and calculate the reaction forces
➢ In first we equate the all forces, then find the moment around RR

Now, we are finding all the calculation of coil spring step by step:
Given Data:
P=2366N, d=15, D=90, C=6, G=77200 (Stainless steel), Deflection=40mm (Max)

Changes in Material and Dimensions for performance Improvement:
P=2366N, d=17, D=90, C=5.3, N=11(same no of turns)
G=79300(Structural steel), Deflection=40mm (Max)

Result comparison and discussion:
Here we observe all the data of design 1 and design 2, after changing one
factor the wire diameter, the deflection and other factors are changing.
Conclusion:
• Higher wire diameter (17mm) deflection & stresses are observed to be
lesser than smaller diameter (15mm) for same material, hence
recommended using 17mm wire spring for current two-wheeler.
• In future, DOE can be done to optimize the mass & other parameter by
changing material to composite & changing geometric parameters.
