INTRODUCTION
The case study of Royal Thai hotel was a wonderful learning experience for me in

relation to group formation and fulfilling my roles as a part. This group work was a combination

of discussion, understanding, coordination and support by all team members in pursuit of

common objective. This group activity allowed me to polish my reasoning and leadership skills

as it introduced me to complex scenarios. There has been conflict of opinions, difference in

approaches of analysis, difference in abilities and perceptions. However at the end of the day, we

were a ‘Team’, settling conflicts and finding solutions.

GROUP’S PERFORMANCE AND LEARNING

The learning experience from this group activity was exceptional since I had assistance of

great group members. It was a chance for us to evaluate our individual capacities in a collective

manner. Furthermore, it enabled each of us to evaluate our own strengths as well as weaknesses

and how to make good use of them, as a Team. According to Bruce Tuckman’s stages of group

development (1965), any particular group has have to go through four stages of development i.e.

forming, storming, norming and performing [ CITATION Bru65 \l 1033 ]. Our group has also been

exposed to these stages in accordance with the idea of author. Adams argues that poor

communication within teams is the root of most of the team issues, and restrict members to

collaborate, or being creative and energetic [ CITATION Ste08 \l 1033 ]. Effective communication

was a strategic advantage of our group because it was a small group of two people from

relatively similar cultural and linguistic background.

I was designated as the leader of my group. My responsibility was not only to distribute

the roles and tasks evenly among members but also to devise policies and procedures for

managing the affairs of the group activity while maintaining relationship with other members.

According to Bailey, there is a fine line between good leaders and great leaders which is

established through two main elements: Force and Direction. The rightful combination of both

elements i.e. ability to enforce ideas which are suitable and ability to designate responsibility in

contrast to the team members’ skillset [CITATION Jam16 \l 1033 ].

I have personally adopted the ‘Vital’ leader approach from the abovementioned types. To keep

clarity towards our final destination, I habitually reminded the ultimate vision of our group to my

partner i.e. higher marks and importance in sight of our lecturer and work assessor, Mr. Ross

Spence. Since our case-study was about empowerment, I learned the glories of empowerment

and implemented it on myself to lead an example for my partner. I dominated the initiative

moves, always gave recognition to my partner’s work, always lead towards positive imagination

and conveyed the same to my partner.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND PERFORMANCE

This group activity allowed me to practically implement those skills and expertise which

have yet be a part of my learning in classroom environment. First of all, it was a great source of

developing my interpersonal skills as the activity involved thorough reading, writing, listening

and speaking parts between team members. Moreover, acting as the leader of group polished my

leadership and managerial skills such as delegating work, analyzing work, motivating others and

decision making.

On the other hand, I gained first-hand knowledge about hospitality industry and different

management practices continued in different parts of the world. I understood that people around

the world have difference in thoughts, perceptions, beliefs and opinions about life. They cannot

be dictated the concepts which one believe, the universally best approach in his own mental

capacity. I also learned that deep planning and workplace evaluation exercise plays a vital role in

devising a perfect future strategy for a workplace. During this phase, I can make good use of my

interpersonal skills such as listening, observation, speaking, appreciations, and empowerment as

well as bureaucracy upto some extent. I have gained an important lesson of my life that if you

want to be listened, you have to give chance to other to speak and listen carefully. Else the other

person would never allow you to speak in full. Bregman has also concluded that listening is far

more persuasive than speaking because it persuade those to speak, who never present their point

unless being pushed [ CITATION Pet15 \l 1033 ].

5 Individual Reflection Report

CONCLUSION
Overall, this group activity on Royal Thai hotel was a remarkable experience for me to

evaluate my personal potential and testing the vital leadership traits in my personality. Personally

I am convinced with my performance on individual note as well as being a part of a team. Since I

am a supporter of empowerment and allowed my partner to be a leader in his own capacity, I

believe he has also had great deal of learning and personal development with respect of

leadership and managerial skills. I also believe that working in cross-cultural group having more

members in future will test our skillset and potential on greater level [ CITATION Woo11 \l 1033 ]. I

would love to be part of that group in future.
