My Tasks (Activities)

A. What were your observations about the pupils/students you

handled last term/semester?

Last year I taught three different grade levels. Grade 7 through grade 9.
My grade 7 class comprised of students with different abilities, hence a
mixed-ability classroom. For most part, they were still naïve and very
inquisitive and a bit slow at understanding scientific concepts at a go.
However, they performed better when working in groups.
As for my eighth graders, they displayed some sense of maturity and
were gradually exhibiting some sense of independence. They would ask
for clarification during lessons without being shy. My ninth graders
were very studious as they were in an examination class. Their level of
togetherness was quite fascinating as they worked on the principle one
no one left behind. Mentally, they were able to understand why they
need education as a whole.

B. Create an opportunity where you can gather their thoughts, ideas

and feelings about their school/subject/classmates.

About their school

At the beginning of the academic year, I asked the students to

briefly write four sentences each as why they would
recommend their school to a friend and what were the
downsides of being a students at their school.

About their subject

Given that I teach science, I created different 7 categories with two option
each; Like or Dislike. I wrote like at the back of the classroom and dislike at
the front of the classroom. The students stood in the middle, whenever I
would display a category on the projector, they will move towards their
preferred option. The categories were; Method of teaching, group work,
homework, experiments, student book, importance, methods of assessment.

About their classmates

I made a sheet with questions and statements and gave it to each student to
fill. I later collected all and compared the results. The sheet had questions
and sentences like; - Who is the most helpful in class? - Likes to sing. –
Who has the best memory to recall things? – Who is the friendliest? – Who
is the laziest? - Who likes to sleep in class? - Asks the most questions in
class. – Who likes to lead activities in class? These are just a few.
C. What are the rules I need to set to ensure quality instruction among
my learners? Use innovative ways to make your rules known and
followed.

My Analysis

Why do we need to know the various types of learners?

Generally as a teacher, I need to know how my students learn so I can

guide them and lead them to grow in their learning. Moreover, if I know
my students as unique individuals, I can help them to navigate the often
confusing and anxiety filled lives that they lead. Knowing the various types
of learners as a teacher, I will understand their strengths, weaknesses, and
interests which will enable me to help them to be successful academically.
If I know the different learning styles of my students, I would be able to
know what areas they are struggling with and be able to help them through
those struggles or know the areas where they were strong and build on
those strengths. Above all, it goes a long way to help each student to
achieve the best their ability.
My Reflections/My Insights

As a teacher, how will you respond to the needs of your diverse learners?

 I will try to engage all learning styles in every lesson. This will be a
combination of oral introductions, videos and class discussions as well.
 I will also implore the method of scaffolding instructions and activities. In a
nutshell, I will be giving my students just a bit of hidden help to teach them
both the material and skills needed.
 I may also group them by learning styles not ability, as this gives them an
opportunity to coach their peers.
