Suratul Faatihah
1. In the Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.
2. All the praises and thanks belong to Allah the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind,
jinn and all that exists).
3. The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.
4. The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e.
the Day of Resurrection).
5. You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and
everything).
6. Guide us on the straightway.
7. The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way)
of those who earned your Anger (such as the Jews), nor those who are astray
(such as the Christians).

Some of the Names for Suratul Faatihah
1. The Mother of the Book (Ummul Kitaab)/ The Mother of the Qur’an
(Ummul Qur’an) 1: It has these names because it is the first Surah that is written in the
Mushaf.
2. The Praise (Al Hamd): It is called this because in it is the ayah that praises Allah2.
3. The Prayer (As Salaah)3: It is called this because it is du’ah, and salaah in the Arabic
language means du’ah.
4. The Seven Most Repeated Verses (As Saba’a Al Muthanee): It has this name
because there are seven ayaat (verses) in the surah, and because they are the most
repeated verses in salaah (they are repeated in every raka’ah). Allah Ta’ala says:
َﻭﹶﻟ ﹶﻘ ْﺪ ﺁَﺗْﻴﻨَﺎ َﻙ َﺳْﺒﻌًﺎ ﱢﻣ َﻦ ﺍﹾﻟ َﻤﺜﹶﺎﻧﹺﻲ ﻭَﺍﹾﻟ ﹸﻘﺮْﺁ ﹶﻥ ﺍﹾﻟ َﻌﻈِﻴ َﻢ
“And indeed We have bestowed upon you seven repeatedly recited verses,
and the Grand Qur’an.” [Suratul Hijr: 87]
And the Prophet’s (SallAllahu alaihi wa sallam) said:
“The Mother of the Qur’an: it is the seven most repeated verses and the Grand
Qur’an.”4
5. The Healing (Ar Ruqya): It is used to heal the sick and afflicted.

The Number of Ayaat in Suratul Faatihah and Where the Surah
was Revealed
• Suratul Fatihah was revealed in Mecca.
