Thermodynamics Problem Analysis

The document presents a thermodynamics problem involving a 500-liter tank containing a saturated mixture of steam and water at 300°C. It asks to determine (a) the mass of each phase if their volumes are equal, and (b) the volume occupied by each phase if their masses are equal. The analysis uses properties of steam and water from an appendix to calculate that (a) the mass of water is 178.09 kg and steam is 11.55 kg if their volumes are equal, and (b) the volume of steam is 0.03045 m3 and water is 0.46955 m3 if their masses are equal.

Chapter IV - PROPERTIES OF PURE SUBSTANCES

Problem 4.13

A 500-liter tank contains a saturated mixture of steam and water at 300°C.

Determine (a) the mass of each phase if their volumes are equal; (b) the volume
occupied by each phase if their masses are equal.

Given: Tank with.saturated mixture at 300°C.

Find: Mass for equal volumes, and volume for equal masses.

Sketch & Given Data:

Assumption: 1) Mixture is in equilibrium.

Analysis: Using Appendix A5 at T = 300°C.

(V,)(0.021648m3/kg) = (0.0014038m3/kg)(0.5m 3-V,)

V, = 0.03045m3 Vv = 0.46955m3
