Introduction To Electromagnetic Relay: Experiment No. 4

An electromagnetic relay uses a coil of wire and magnetic field to open and close electrical circuits. It has advantages over direct electrical connections as it allows for physical and electrical separation of the controlling and controlled circuits. The relay consists of an armature, yoke, coil, core and contacts surrounded by a housing for protection. When electric current flows through the coil, it generates a magnetic field that activates the armature to open or close the electrical contacts, allowing the relay to switch circuits or devices.

THEORY
Electromagnetic relays are switching devices that
utilize induction to perform a specific task within an
electrical circuit or system. The electromagnetic
phenomenon is used to create a magnetic field, which is
then focused and used to open or close circuits and even
perform mechanical functions.
An electromagnetic relay uses the principle of
induction to control electronic circuits and devices. A coil
of wire sets up a magnet field that is concentrated around
a core. This magnetic field is used to physically open and
close circuits or activate armatures for mechanical work.
One of the key advantages of electromagnetic relays is that they are electrically and physically separate from
the circuits they control. Another distinct advantage of relays is their ability to switch circuits. This ability
eventually has given rise to more powerful and faster electronics, including the modern computer and
microprocessor.

Construction

 Relay consists of the armature, yoke, coli, core, contacts, and springs.
 The housing either plastic or metal is used.
 The housing is used to protect the relay against the damage of foreign objects and the interference
of electromagnetic field.
Working
Electromagnets are unique because they have the ability to be turned on and off. This is done by breaking
or completing the circuit that gives the electromagnet its magnetic properties. For this reason, they are often
used in different industrial settings that require the movement of large metal objects, such as junkyards.
Electromagnets use a very simple property: tightly coiled wire around a piece of metal that creates a
magnetic field if exposed to a current. Usually, the wire wrapped around this metal is copper. By themselves,
these parts do not exhibit magnetic properties. However, once they have been introduced to a source of
energy, usually from a battery, the magnetic properties activate fully. As long as there is a flow of current
running through the wire, it will continue to maintain an electromagnetic field.
