WIRING A WEB FOR GLOBAL GOOD BY GORDON BROWN
Summary
Gordon Brown shows five pictures the first pictures he showed is the Vietnam girl
named Kim, Gordon said her back ruined by napalm and she awakend the conscience
of nation of America to begin to end the Vietnam war. The second picture showed is an
Ethiophian girl named Birhan, who launched live aid in the 1980’s, the video show a
picture of her being rescued. The third picture shows Tiananmen square there’s a man
before a tank and it became a symbol for the whole world of resistence. The next
picture is the Sudanese girl a few, a few moments from death a vulture hovering in the
background, went round the world and shocked people into action on poverty. The last
picture is the Iranian girl named Neda who was shot while at the demonstraction with
her father in Iran, she is now the focus of the youtube generation.
Gordon asked “what do all these pictures and events have in common?” he said
what they have in common is what we see unlocks what we cannot see, what we see
unlocks the invisible ties and bonds of sympathy that bring us together to become a
human community. What I see in the pictures is I feel the pain of others, however
distantly. Gordon said what he think in the pictures shows in video is that we do believe
in something bigger than ourselves. What those pictures demonstrate is that there is a
moral sense across all religions across all faiths across all continents.
He mentioned about the story of Olof Palme the Swedish prime Mininster, going
to see Ronald Reagan in America. We believe that there is a moral sense and a good
ethic that commands attention from people of every religion. We now have a capacity to
find common ground, with people who we will never meet, but who we will meet through
internet and through all the modern means of communication. I believe that this makes
a unique age in human history and it is the start of what I would call a creation of a truly
global society
The major points from the video that I want to discuss is about Eglantyne Jebb, the
woman who created Save the Children 90 years ago. She was so appalled by what was
happening in Austria, as a result of first world war, she need to go house to house to get
people attend the rally in the royal albert hall. If she’d had the modern means of
communications available to her to create a sense that the injustice that people saw had
to be acted upon immediately. Now look what happened in the last 10 years. Here in the
Philippines in 2001 President Estrada, a million people texted each other about the
corruption of that regime, we all know that corruption is the number one problem here in
the Philippines.
The second major point is about the challenge ahead, the challenge of poverty,
of climate change global challenges that needed global solutions One of the major
challenges in our time is climate change. All of those shifting weathers that ruins the
food production that is one of the reason for poverty, the rising of sea levels that
increase the risk of flooding and the scope of such impacts of climate change do not just
affect a certain community but affects globally. The conflict between countries that
causes war is also one of the global issues that had emerged long ago. Those wars that
ruined infrastructures and the peaceful life that the people would have lived. All effects
would have been prevented if all the countries involved could have communicate well.
Security and peace that could have been achieved if there would be a good
communication happening between countries. All of these global issues could have
been prevented if only there were a good communication. A communication that would
benefit the majority and will result to a better global society.
In real life example is about Eglantyne Jebb in our generation there is a lot of
rally happening and some of them is a students that want a change in our country, we
all know that here in the Philippines our government is just taking action about drugs. In
Save the Children created by Jebb is now an international organization that is now a
fully recognized and it’s a good example an a good organization for the children who is
in need.
The second example is about the challenge ahead, the first one is poverty, in
Philippines poverty is one of the problem, people who is experiencing poverty is
expanding everyday some of them need to beg for their food, some of them stealing for
them to survive. Because the government is not taking action to decrease the people
who is experiencing poverty the second one is climate change, it’s the major challenge
this time all those shifting of weathers that ruin the food production and also ruin the
health of the people, lot of them having flu getting sick because of the shifting of
weathers
