ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT
METAPHOR
A Metaphor is a word or phrase used to show its similarity to another thing. There are ten diffrent
types of metaphors they are Primary Metaphors , Complex Metaphors , Dead Metaphors , Creative
Metaphors , Extended Metaphors , Absolute Metaphors , Conceptual Metaphors , Implied
Metaphors , Mixed Metaphors , and Root Metaphors. It helps to explain an idea, but if you take a
metaphor at its literal meaning it will sound absurd. An example of a metaphor is “Alex is a chicken”.
Literally, this sounds so very absurd.
⦁ Primary Metaphors - The primary metaphor is the most basic of metaphors. Example : love is
blind" and "patience is a virtue." In these metaphors, two items are compared, side by side, and the
meaning is clear.
⦁ Complex Metaphors - Complex metaphors are a combination of primary metaphors. With
these, you're comparing two or more subjects. Examples : "Travel is no more than a sorcerer's
cauldron full of emeralds".
⦁ Dead Metaphors - A dead metaphor is a figure of speech which has lost the original imagery
of its meaning due to extensive, repetitive, and popular usage. Example : "I'd be lost without you?".
⦁ Creative Metaphors - A creative metaphor is an original comparison that calls attention to
itself as a figure of speech. Also known as a poetic metaphor. Example : "The snow is a white
blanket".
⦁ Extended Metaphors - An extended metaphor, also known as a conceit or sustained
metaphor, is an author's exploitation of a single metaphor or analogy at length through multiple
linked tenors, vehicles, and grounds throughout a poem or story. Example : "Not even the lightning
bolts could catch her as she raced down the highway."
⦁ Absolute Metaphors - These metaphors compare two things that have no obvious
connection, in order to make a striking point. Example : "She is doing a tightrope walk with her
grades this semester."
⦁ Conceptual Metaphors - conceptual metaphors refers to the understanding of one idea, or
conceptual domain, in terms of another. These metaphors take one subject and illustrate it in
different terms. Examples : "Argument is war".
⦁ Implied Metaphors - An implied metaphor is a type of metaphor that compares two things
that are not alike without actually mentioning one of those things . Example : “A woman barked a
warning at her child.”
⦁ Mixed Metaphor - is a succession of incongruous or ludicrous comparisons. Also known—
playfully—as a mixaphor . Example - “If we want to get ahead we'll have to iron out the remaining
bottlenecks".
⦁ Root Metaphor - A root metaphor is an image, narrative, or fact that shapes an individual's
perception of the world and interpretation of reality. Also called a basic metaphor, master
metaphor, or myth. Example - "Weak women are time-sucks."
