Start By:

A. Remove the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal -
Remove".
B. Remove the electric starter motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starter
Motor - Remove".

NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop


Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Remove six bolts (1) that fasten the engine oil pan to flywheel housing (2) .

2. Install Tool (A) and a hoist on flywheel housing (2) .

3. Remove bolts (3). Remove flywheel housing (2) from the cylinder block. The weight of the
flywheel housing is approximately 31 kg (68 lb).

4. Remove seal (3) and seal (4) from the flywheel housing.

Note: During assembly, inspect the following components for any foreign materials: the front
face of the flywheel housing, the two seals, and the rear face of the cylinder block. These
components must be free of the following substances: oil fuel, water, gasket adhesive,
assembly compounds, and any other foreign material.

1. Install Tool (A) and a hoist on the flywheel housing.

2. Put 8T-9022 Silicone Gasket on seal (4) and seal (5). Install the seals in the flywheel housing.

3. Position flywheel housing (2) on the cylinder block. Install bolts (3) and remove Tool (A) .

4. Tighten the bolts, as follows:

a. In a numerical sequence, tighten bolt 1 through bolt 9.

Torque for bolts ... 100 ± 20 N·m (30 ± 15 lb ft)

b. In a numerical sequence, tighten bolt 10 through bolt 24.

Torque for bolts ... 40 ± 10 N·m (30 ± 7 lb ft)

c. In a numerical sequence, again tighten bolt 1 through bolt 9.

Torque for bolts ... 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft)

d. In a numerical sequence, again tighten bolt 10 through bolt 24.

Torque for bolts ... 55 ± 10 N·m (40 ± 7 lb ft)

End By:

a. Install the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting
Motor - Remove and Install".
b. Install the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal -
Install".
