INTRODUCTION TO LOCAL AREA NETWORK
Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and other devices in a
relatively small area like a single or a group of buildings. LANs connect workstations and
personal computers and enable users to access data and devices anywhere on the network
plus communicate with each other by sending e-mails at very fast rates and having chat
sessions. Networked computers can share hardware, software and data. LANs can be
characterized by topology whereas the devices arrangements are based on the network
geometrically. Protocols are the rules and encoding specifications for sending data using
network.
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE NETWORK IN UiTM
The type of network that UiTM used is Local Area Network (LAN), this network is
effective to be implement in UiTM because Local Area Network is suitable for confined to a
single room, building or group of buildings. One LAN can be connected to other LANs over any
distance via telephone lines and radio waves. Printers can be shared by all of the computers.
This means that better quality printing is available to everyone because one or two expensive,
high specification printers can be bought instead of several cheaper, lower specification models.
So in UiTM LAN convenience students to access internet and printer to communicate with each
other. Using LAN, people can access internet and searching data in fast speed. Other than
that, the cost of using LAN is relatively cheap to have as it tends to require less hassle to set up
and less advanced infrastructure to keep it running.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF LOCAL AREA NETWORK
The type of network that UNIVERSITY TEKNOLOGI MARA (UiTM) used is Local Area Network
(LAN). Network is extremely useful for various tasks in UiTM, but their benefits must be
considered carefully against their drawbacks. There are some advantages of using LANs to the
UiTM. First is wireless LANs are very easy to install. There is no requirement for wiring every
workstation and every room. This ease of installation makes wireless LANs inherently flexible. If
a workstation must be moved, it can be done easily and without additional wiring, cable drops or
reconfiguration of the network. Second, sending messages. In addition to communicating with a
central information source, networks allow communication between network users. Instead of
sending notes and memos on paper, they can send messages and information to other users
via the network which has advantages on the speed of transmission and reduction of paper
clutter. Third, the safe and secure data. Although a network connects many users together and
make access to data more open. It also offers security safeguards for protecting users and their
data. Passwords and access codes ensure that only authorized people can read or write the
protected data Network software also protects against data loss by using more than one hard
disk drive on the network for data storage. Firstly, the disadvantages of the Local Area Network
are cost. As we know that, the cost of the hardware and software that usually use in UiTM are
very expensive. The cost of that equipment will depend on the features of the network and the
number of the computers being networked. Secondly, an additional complexity also one of the
disadvantages in UiTM because network can bring new complexities to support the requirement
such as the new user must be trained to use network properly and the support staff must be
trained to the network. These complexities can be minimized in practice if the network is
designed and implemented properly by experienced personnel. Thirdly, the disadvantages of
the Local Area Network in UiTM are network dependence. They will depend on the network
when they want to share data, printers and others resources. If the single failure disruption for
everyone on the network, it will affect hundreds or thousands of the other users

PROBLEM FACED BY THE ORGANIZATION
UITM receive feedback from the Branch Librarian Terengganu that there are network
interruptions for server Error http://ezaccess.library.uitm.edu.my placed EZproxy to access Parul
(Co-location) in the Data Center server, the Internet Data Center ( IDC), UPM-MTDC. Because
of that, the web has been getting feedback from the Network Error UiTM where they said they
often will occur in the Metro Ethernet bandwidth to utilize or ezproxy server down (unreachable).
However, QOS (Quality of Service) which define in the Metro Ethernet has given priority to
traffic to / from an intranet application (which hosted in Shah Alam and Data Center Cyberjaya).
Since exproxy server hosted outside network UiTM, there is no priority for traffic to or from the
server (fall under best effort).
Second, serve down. Student portal UiTM has repeatedly caused issues in front of the
students, whenever they tried to login. There was a time, when the respective students used to
wait for days to get this portal opened. As a result to this, the students of UiTM had to go
through a lot of hassles in order to surf this website properly. this often happens when the
results are released.
