CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
In society nowadays, a single click makes anything easy and going. Even when it
comes on doing a simple thing such as communicating with someone, searching for
information, looking for food, shopping, or any other task can be accomplish by just
scrolling through your phone and browsing on the internet. Just one click away and you
can easily have it without even sweating too much. Just like in social media people have
today. It was easy to see people’s activity because they documented or photograph
themselves while doing it and post it on their social media accounts. Photography is
seen as a powerful means of expression, as a symbolic language to express what
cannot be said in words, and as a stimulator of emot ions and behaviours about which
often are not aware of. (E.Mullai et.al, 2016) Taking a photo of your own self before
without the help of others hasn’t been a big deal, until selfies came into existence.
Selfies became a very interesting topic because a great number of individuals
practiced the trends of taking and posting selfies and if it must always be a part of their
everyday life. In 2010, Selfie had gained loud attention in social media. According to a
study by Jillian McHugh on 3 April 2013, two thirds of women aged 16-35 make selfie
order posting on Facebook. The word "selfie" was so widespread that it is even
declared as the "word of the year" by the Oxford English Dictionary on November 2013.
Define as “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a
smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website” most commonly
known as “Selfie” (Oxford English Dictionary, 2013).
According to Haggard (2014), people use self-imaging as a way to validate o r
express themselves. However, other researchers relate these phenomena to a person’s
self-esteem or narcissism.
Researchers find out that people with low self – esteem tend to be more involved
in taking selfies, as well as the use of social media to mediate their interpersonal
interaction in order to fill their self – esteem needs. (Varnali, 2015)
Hence, this research aimed to study the relationship between self – esteem
levels and the numbers of selfies people take and post.
