Conductivity Vs Chlorides

This document discusses the relationship between chlorides and conductivity in water. It presents data from experiments measuring the conductivity and chloride concentration in 4 NaCl solutions. The data shows a direct relationship between chlorides (ppm) and conductivity (μS), with approximately 2.26 μS of conductivity produced per 1 ppm of chlorides. A graph is included showing chloride concentration increasing along the x-axis and corresponding conductivity increasing along the y-axis.

Conductivity vs Chlorides relation:
What is conductivity?
Conductivity is a measure of water’s capability to pass electrical flow. This ability is directly related
to the concentration of ions in the water. These conductive ions come from dissolved salts and
inorganic materials such as alkalis, chlorides, sulfides and carbonate compounds. Compounds
that dissolve into ions are also known as electrolytes. The more ions that are present, the higher
the conductivity of water.

Chlorides:
The chloride ion is the anion (negatively charged ion) Cl−. It is formed when the element chlorine
(a halogen) gains an electron or when a compound such as hydrogen chloride is dissolved in
water or other polar solvents. Chloride salts such as sodium chloride are often very soluble in
water.
The purpose of this findings to know about how much concentration (ppm) of chlorides can
increase conductivity. For this we have prepare 4 known NaCl solution and measure their
conductivity and chlorides. Which are as follow:
Conductivity (
No. Chloride (ppm) µs)
1 108 498
2 189 885
3 232 1055
4 351 1490

As we know that 1 molecule of NaCl has two ions. Na + and Cl- from above data we will calculate
conductivity per chloride ion. Which is as Follow:
Chloride Conductivity For
(ppm) (µS) Conductivity/total chlorides*
1 108 498 4.611111111 2.305555556
2 189 885 4.682539683 2.341269841
3 232 1055 4.547413793 2.273706897
4 351 1490 4.245014245 2.122507123

From Above calculation it is now clear that 1 ppm of chloride produce 2.26 µS
conductivity.
*Sodium and chloride have equal number of ions so divided by 2 to get
Conductivity per Chloride.
