India's first national park was established in 1936 as 'Jim Corbett National Park". By 1970, India only
had five national parks. In 1972, India enacted the Wildlife Protection Act and Project Tiger to safe-
guard the habitats of conservation-reliant species. Further federal legislation was introduced in the
1980s. As of July 2019, there are 104 national parks encompassing an area of 40,500 square km
(15,600 square mi), comprising 1.23% of India’s total surface area.

List of Biosphere Reserves in India
The Indian government has established around eighteen biosphere reserves in India which protect
larger areas of natural habitat and often include one or more national parks and/or preserves, along
with buffer zones that are open to some economic uses. Protection is granted not only to the flora and
fauna of the protected region, but also to the human communities who inhabit these regions, and
