1
ASSIGNMENT - Plan, design, deliver and evaluate a training program.
PROCESS
1. Students will be assigned to groups of 2 .
2. Groups will select a topic for their training program. The topic will be one in which most of the
group members have expertise and in which most of the class has little expertise.
3. The group will conduct a needs assessment. Analysis should be conducted at both the task and
person levels.
4. The group will develop training objectives based on the task analysis data.
5. The group will develop a detailed proposal for their training program, which will include:
a. title and overall description of the program
b. training objectives
c. training methods to be used and the rationale for using them (including a discussion of the
principles on which the choices are based).
d. a tentative lesson plan
e. a list and brief description of training materials
f. a program evaluation plan. Evaluation should be done at both the reaction and learning
levels.
6. The group will receive feedback on the proposal, make revisions, and then develop the training
program.
7. The group will implement the training program in class, using class members not in their group as
the trainees.
8. The group will carry out the evaluation plan and write a final report that evaluates the
effectiveness of the program and gives the group's summary and evaluation of the project. Training
materials, final lesson plan, and evaluation instruments must be handed in.
SPECIFICS

EVALUATION
You can earn points for:
1. Project Plan (5 points) - Clear, detailed, and equitable?
2. Task Analysis (15 points) - Appropriate methods used? Clear identification of learner’s current
state of skill/knowledge? Thorough research into task/knowledge? Clear, detailed description of
task/knowledge areas, conditions, tools/equipment used to do task? Is the needs analysis data
appropriate and adequate to develop objectives and design the course?
3. Design/Implementation Proposal (25 points) - Does the proposal clearly address all key areas?
Are training objectives specific and appropriate? Rationale for and appropriateness of training
methods selected? Adequacy of tentative lesson plan?
4. Evaluation Proposal (15 points) - Evaluation plan and instruments appropriate? Address both
reaction and learning level? Provide convincing rationale for choices?
2. Program Implementation (15 points) - Extent to which program is implemented according to the
agreed-upon proposal and is delivered clearly and effectively (e.g., oral communication,
responsiveness to trainee questions); All members significantly involved in the implementation of
the program?
3. Final Report (25 points) - Training materials clear, complete, and relevant? Evaluation and
conclusions appropriate and supported? Show evidence program was successful? Self evaluation of
project critical and thoughtful?
You can lose points for:
1. Spelling, punctuation, grammar: I will avoid taking deductions here to the extent that things don't
become excessive. Content is king (or queen, as the case may be).
2. Incompleteness - varies depending on what is missing
3. Lateness - late reports will be accepted only if I specifically agree in advance to accept them. The
training program must be implemented on the assigned date, regardless of how many of the group
members are present.
AND FINALLY
But the project is intended to give you significant first-hand experience in designing, evaluating, and
delivering a training program. Not only will it impress prospective employers, you will be better
equipped to perform these activities when it really counts.
