Rafael Nadal wins Mexican Open title 2020


 World Number 2 Rafael Nadal wins his first title of the year, defeating unseeded Taylor Fritz in straight sets,
6-3, 6-2, in the final of the ATP Mexico Open.
 He secured his 85th ATP Tour title. Nadal won the ATP 500 title for the third time and first since the event
changed from clay to hard-court in 2014.
 In the women’s final, seventh-seeded Heather Watson captured her first WTA title in three years by grinding
out a 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 win over Canadian teen Leylah Fernandez.

SPMCIL contributed Rs.1 crore for National Sports Development Fund


 Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India (SPMCIL) funded a sum of Rs.1 crore towards the National
Sports Development Fund under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).
 The fund will be given for the top Indian athletes who are selected for the Tokyo Olympics and beyond.

First KIU Games concludes in Bhubaneswar Chandigarh tops medals tally


 Khelo India University Games ended in Bhubaneswar, Odisha Panjab University Chandigarh took home the
champions trophy-winning 46 medals, including 17 gold 19 silver and ten bronze.
Savitribai Phule Pune University
 Savitribai Phule Pune University claimed the second position and Punjabi University, Patiala declared as the
second runners up.
 Panjab University won a total of 46 medals while Savitribai Phule Pune University won 37 medals, including
17 gold, 11 silver, and nine bronze medals.
 Punjabi University, Patiala won 33 medals, including 13 gold, six silver, and 14 bronze medals.
 A total of 113 universities took part in the games.
 India's fastest woman Dutee Chand representing Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology clinched the gold
medal with a timing of 23.66 seconds in the 200m final.
 Kirti Vijay Bhoite from the University of Mumbai settled for silver with a schedule of 24.98 seconds while
Deepali Mahapatra from Utkal University won the bronze, clocking 25.19 seconds.

ATK FC wins record 3rd Indian Super League title
 ATK FC (Football Club) won the ISL (Indian Super League) trophy for the 3rd time following a 3-1 win
against Chennaiyin FC in the final match held at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa.
 Javier Hernandez and Edu Garcia were the goal scorers for ATK FC in the final match. ATK (Atlético de
Kolkata) is an Indian professional football club based in Kolkata, West Bengal.

French Open delayed due to coronavirus pandemic


 The French Open tennis tournament has been postponed by the French Tennis Federation due to the
coronavirus pandemic.
 The Grand Slam tournament which was scheduled to be held in the month of May-June, 2020 has been
postponed.
 The 2020 edition of Roland Garros (French Open tennis tournament) will now held in the month of
September-October 2020.
 The decision has been taken by the French Tennis Federation (FFT) to ensure the health and safety of people
involved in the preparation of the tournament.
Two Indians named in International Panel of ICC Development Umpires
 Vrinda Rathi and Janani Narayanan have been named in the International Panel of ICC Development
Umpires.
 The announcement was made after the launch of 100% Cricket. 100% Cricket is a 12-month campaign which
has been launched to build on the momentum of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020.
 Tamil Nadu’s Janani Narayanan is a software engineer and she wrote her umpiring exams in 2015 before
officiating in the TNCA league.

UEFA postpones all the international matches
 UEFA has postponed all the international matches that had been pushed back to June to further notice.

 The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijju inaugurated the India Community Coach Development
Programme
Highlights:
 The India Community Coach Development Programme is a 25-day long programme for community coaches
and PE teachers all over the country.
 The programme has been launched to give more importance to Physical Education in schools. Both the
Ministry of HRD and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports are to work together to take the programme to
every school. Besides regular sessions by eminent educationalists in the sports field, international expert will
also participate in the programme.
 The Physical Education teachers and community coaches have major role to reach every child, motivate them
to participate in fitness and sports activities.
 The GoI has also launched several steps to encourage people to take up fitness as their way of life. The Fit
India Movement is one such step.

 The Fit India Movement was launched by PM Modi. The movement highlighted the need to stay healthy
amidst the modern lifestyle disorders. It was announced to celebrate the National Sports Day.

MHRD, Sports Ministry launch special films to promote indigenous sports of India
 The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the Ministry of Sports have collaborated to
produce a series of special films to promote 10 indigenous sports of India.
 For implementation, the Department of School Education and Literacy under MHRD has partnered with the
Ministry of Sports flagship programme 'Fit India' under the 'Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat' initiative.
Highlights:
 The series is aimed to raise awareness about the indigenous games and the culture and heritage of the states to
which they belong.
 The 10 sports that will be covered in the series are:
Kho-kho, Gatka, Kalaripayttu, Mallakhamb, Thang-Ta, Sqay, Kabaddi, Roll Ball, Tug of War, Shooting Ball.
 The indigenous sports of India will also cover a mix of very old sports, like, Kalaripayattu, and some recent
Roll Ball which has gained a lot of popularity and is now played in at least 50 countries.
 The 10 episodes can be watched from June 8 to June 19, Monday to Friday, at 11 am, on the Fit India
YouTube page and MHRD digital platforms.
 Under the initiative, there are scholarships for athletes of these games and there is a growing interest among
youngsters to pursue these sports.

in April.

Government to establish 1,000 district-level Khelo India Centres
 The Ministry of Sports has decided to establish 1,000 Khelo India Centers (KIC) at the district level across the

Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry will launch TOPS for Junior Athletes
 In order to groom young athletes in the country for the upcoming Olympics of 2024 (Paris) and 2028 (Los
Angeles), the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will launch- Target Olympic Podium Scheme
(TOPS) for the junior athletes.
 This was informed on 3rd July 2020 by Kiren Rijiju (Union Minister of State I/C for Youth Affairs and
Sports) during the launch of the ‘Fit Hai to Hit India’ program.
 The objective of the scheme will be to ensure that the efforts are being made so that India finished in the top
10 of the overall medals tally at the 2028 Olympics.
Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)
 This scheme was formulated in the month of July 2014.
 The aim of the scheme was to identify individuals with medal prospects from across the country, further
groom and prepare them for the upcoming Olympics and Paralympics.
 For assisting the athletes selected under the TOPS, within the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Mission
Olympic Cell was constituted as a dedicated body.
 Now, the TOPS will be implemented for the Junior Athletes in the country, 10 to 12-year-old talents will be
chosen under the scheme through various talent identification programs by the authorities.

 During his international career spanning nearly a decade, White played 91 ODIs scoring 2,072 runs.
 In T20 Internationals, he scored 984 runs from 47 matches, while he played four Tests for Australia, scoring
146 runs.

 Veteran Indian table tennis player from West Bengal, Poulomi Ghatak, has announced her retirement from the
game to shift focus on coaching career.
 The Kolkata-born athlete is a seven-time national champion, winning between 1998 and 2016.
 The 37-year-old had represented India at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006 and the
Commonwealth Championships between 2000 and 2008.
 She made her Olympic debut at the Olympic Games in Sydney when she was just 16.
India plans to host BRICS Games in 2021
 India is planning to host BRICS Games 2021, which will be aligned with the Khelo India Games scheduled
for next year.
 This announcement came after Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju attended a meeting of Sports Ministers of the
BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
 India will get the chairmanship of the five-nation independent international group in 2021.

 India and Russia have been jointly announced the winner of first-ever FIDE Online Chess Olympiad 2020.
This was the first time FIDE was holding the Olympiad in an online format.
 India were initially declared to have lost the final round against Russia. Two Indian players (Nihal Sarin and
Divya Deshmukh) were declared to have lost on time in the final round after an apparent loss of internet
connection for them.

 Arsenal beat Premier League champions Liverpool by 5–4 on penalties to claim the 2020 FA Community
Shield after a 1–1 draw.
 The annual football match was played between the winners of the previous season’s Premier League,

 Para-swimmer Satyendra Singh Lohia of Madhya Pradesh is the first Divyanga Indian sportsperson of the
country, who has been awarded today with the Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award.
 He is also the first Asian Divyang swimmer to cross the 42-kilometer Catalina Channel in the US in just 11
hours 34 minutes.
 Para-swimmer Satyendra Singh was also conferred with the Best Sportsperson National Award by Vice
President Venkaiah Naidu on World Divyanga Day.
 He has also been awarded the highest sports award of Madhya Pradesh as well as many other national and
international honours.
