Illustrate The Variation B/N Research and Development Project

The document discusses the differences between research and development projects. Traditionally, projects had well-defined requirements and ends while research involved more uncertainty. However, in industries like software development, a project now involves more adaptability and uncertainty due to changing needs. As a result, the line between research and projects has blurred with a spectrum of approaches from highly planned with low uncertainty to more adaptive with high uncertainty. Key differences are that projects have defined starts and ends while research has no time limit and more scientific study but undefined ends. The concept and basic characteristics of development projects are providing direction, having a defined scope and timeline, and solving existing problems through a systematic process.

1. Illustrate the variation b/n Research and development project.

If you use the traditional view of what a "project" is, there is a huge difference. If you use a
more modern view of what a "project" is, it may not be such a big difference. It's a matter of
how you deal with uncertainty...research typically has a huge amount of uncertainty where a
project does not. However, the traditional view of a project is based on a somewhat narrow
definition that no longer fits well in many industries.

The traditional view of a "project" is something that starts with fairly well-defined
requirements and has a clearly-defined business and end. In today's world, that definition
doesn't work that well in industries and application areas such as software development that
have a much higher level of uncertainty demand a more adaptive and Agile approach that is
forcing us to adopt a broader definition of what a "project" is and what "project management"
is.

In this new world the difference between a "project" and "research" isn't as black-and-white
as it may have once been. There is more of a continuous spectrum of approaches from
heavily plan-driven with low levels of uncertainty at one extreme to a much more adaptive
approach with high levels of uncertainty at the other extreme (and lots of alternatives between
those extremes).

Project

 Project involves a set of activities to achieve a defined outcome within a

particular time.
 Mostly it involves breaking a bigger problem into smaller problems and
assigning each small problem to any individual and work in a team to achieve the
solution of a bigger problem in small steps
 There is always a defined start and end of the project
 The project work is normally carried under a supervisor like project head or
project manager
 The main purpose of the project is mostly to find the solution of a problem in
existing system to improve its working.
Research

 Research involves a systematic study

 There is no time limit
 It involves scientific study
 The is a defined start but the end may not be known

2. Discuss about the conceptual characteristics and the basic characteristics of the
development Projects.
A project concept is a statement that gives a program or projects its direction, depth and
meaning. It is used to sell a project and guide decision making. The following are illustrative
examples of a project concept.
