3 RADIO TEACHER: Good day future scientist of Grade 8! It’s an extraordinary
4 school year due to our present circumstance, but no matter what,
5 learning will continue. With that, we still have a chance to explore,
6 discover, and learn new things in science through Radio. I’m so glad to
7 be with you today and I am happy to share with you a new lesson that
8 will surely excite you. This ____________, your science teacher on air.

8 RADIO TEACHER: In Grade 7, you described an object’s motion in terms of
9 displacement, speed or velocity, and acceleration, you also taught on
10 how to compute on their values. You performed sort of activities
11 wherein you interpreted motion. The concept were arrived at by
12 studying examples of uniform motion or objects moving in straight line
13 at a constant speed. Then you were also introduced to non-uniform
14 motion where the object covers unequal distance. When a jeepney starts
15 moving, it speeds up. When a jeepney nears a stop sign, it slows down.
16 The jeepney is covering different displacements at equal time intervals
17 and hence it is not moving at uniform velocity. In other words, the
18 jeepney is accelerating. Most of the motions we come across in our daily
19 life are non-uniform and the primary cause of changes in motion is
20 FORCE.

4
RADIO TEACHER: FORCE can be operationally defined based on the observed
5
effects. This means that a force can be described in terms of what it
6
does. Therefore, Force is simply defined as push or pull as exemplified
7
8 in the situation raised earlier. However, forces do not always cause
9 motion. It does not necessarily follow that force acting on an object will
10 always cause it to move. Take these examples and try to make pictures
11 on your minds, where forces have tendency to changing motion of an
12 object or not. Example 1. A girl sitting on chair Example 2. A boy
13 pushing a wall and last example A woman throwing a ball.
14 BIZ MSC UP AND UNDER
15 RADIO TEACHER: What can forces do? Forces can produce changes in motion.
16 What are these changes in motion? All of these questions will be
17 answered as we go on.
18 BIZ MSC UP AND UNDER
19 RADIO TEACHER: Most of the motions we come across in our daily life caused
20 primarily by FORCE, to better understand the topic, perform this
21 simple activity page 6 on your module. Examine the ball on top of the
table. Choose the letter of your answer to the conditions write your
answer on .
BIZ MSC UP AND UNDER
1 RADIO TEACHER: Let’s start with the first condition,

5 In letter A, is the ball at rest? A. Yes or B. No, Number 2, How can you
6 make the ball move? A. the ball has to be pushed or pulled or B. the ball
7 does not move. Third condition, In letter B, what happens to the ball
8 when you push it with enough force? A. The ball moves in the same
9 direction as the force or B. The ball does not move, Number 4, In letter
10 C, while it is moving, how can you make the ball stop? A. Exert a force
11 opposite the motion of the ball or B. The ball has to be pushed in the
12 same direction of its motion. Lastly, number 5, In letter D, how can we
13 make the call change its direction? A. The ball has to be pushed or
14 BIZ MSC UP AND UNDER
15 RADIO TEACHER: Let us now check your answer. For Number 1, the answer is
16 A. Yes, (PAUSE) For Number 2 The ball has to pushed/pulled (PAUSE)
17 Number 3, The ball moves in the same direction as the ball (PAUSE) For
18 number 4, Exert a force opposite the motion of the ball (PAUSE) and
19 finally, Number 5 The ball has to be pushed sideways.
20 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
21 RADIO TEACHER: Give you self a hand for your scores, whether it is high or low
22 at least you tried to observed and analyze the given conditions.
BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
RADIO TEACHER: You have observed that the ball moves once you push or pull
it. This is called FORCE. Consider the ball on top of a table, the ball will
not move when there is no force applied to it.
-MORE-
Force … 777
1 If you push the ball, it will move or roll across the surface of the table,
2 and when it is again pushed in the direction of its motion, it moves
3 faster and even further, but, when you push it on the other side instead,
4 opposite to the direction of its motion, the ball may slow down and
5 eventually stop.
6 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
7 RADIO TEACHER: In conclusion, force can make the ball, or any object move,
8 move faster, stop, or change in the state of motion on object.
9 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
10 RADIO TEACHER: To accurately describe the force acting on an object, let us
11 examine the figure 7 on page 7 on you modules.
12 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
13 RADIO TEACHER: The figure shows how force acts on a ball but you need to be
14 familiar with the following terms. Magnitude refers to the size or
15 strength of the force. Again, it is the size or strength of the force. It is
16 commonly expressed in Newton or represented by capital letter “N” or
17 Kilogram meter per second square, Dyne which is represented by
18 capital small letter “d-y-n” or Gram Centimeter per Second square and
19 Pound or represented with small letter “l-b-s” for Foot-Pound-per
20 Second Square.
21 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

7 RADIO TEACHER: Let’s dig in! Contact forces-forces where object touch or
8 literally have contact with each other. Can you think of examples?
9 (PAUSE) Great! Let’s see if your answers are correct!
10 RADIO TEACHER: The next term is direction; these are points where the object
11 goes. The direction of the arrowhead indicates the direction of the
12 force. Did you get it? Great!
13 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER
14 RADIO TEACHER: Next is point of application; this is the location of where the
15 force is applied
16 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN OUT
17 RADIO TEACHER: The last term is line of action; it is the straight line passing
18 through the point of application and is parallel to the direction of force.
19 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN OUT
20 RADIO TEACHER: Did you understand the terms? (PAUSE) if Yes that is great!
21 Again, these are the magnitude, direction, point of application and the
22 line of action.

Force … 999
2 RADIO TEACHER: Moving on, there are two types of force, we have contact
3 forces and non-contact forces. Again, contact forces and non-contact
4 forces.
5 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN OUT
6 RADIO TEACHER: Let’s define contact forces these are forces where object
7 touch or contact with each other.
8 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN OUT
9 RADIO TEACHER: Here are examples of contact forces Firstly, Applied Force- it
10 is a force given to a person or object by another person or object. Its
11 symbol is c apital “F” Example is when you push a cart in a grocery
12 store.. Next is Friction represented by capital letter “F” and small letter
13 “f”- is the force acting against or opposite an object in contact with
14 which makes the movement of the object slow down. Friction always
15 opposes the motion of an object. Example is air against a flying kite.
16 The third example is Normal force—is the force that acts
17 perpendicular to the surface of the object in contact with. Its symbol is
18 “F” subscripted with “N”. Lastly, Tension is the force applied to
19 string, rope, chain or cable. Its symbol is capital letter “T”. Can you
20 think of another example based on their definition? (PAUSE) That’s
21 cool!
22 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN OUT
RADIO TEACHER: Let’s now have Non-contact forces.
-MORE-
1 Force … 101010
2 RADIO TEACHER: Forces where objects do not touch or contact with each other.
3 These forces act over a zone or area called field. Can you think of
4 example? Right we have gravitational and magnetic forces.
5 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN
6 RADIO TEACHER: Gravitational Force (Fg)- is the force of attraction between
7 two objects. In the case of the Earth, this gravitational force cause to fall
8 down towards the ground.
9 SFX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUXEAvWuSWY
10 RADIO TEACHER: Time for trivia! Did you know that Earth’s gravitational pull is
11 actually weaker than the pull of a fridge?
12 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN
13 RADIO TEACHER: Another example is magnetic- these are forces exerted on a filed of
14 attraction or repulsion as in the case of magnets and other magnetic materials,
this follow the general rule opposite attracts and similar repel.
15
16 SFX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUXEAvWuSWY
17 RADIO TEACHER: Did you know that Magnets always have two poles -- even if
18 you cut them in half.
19 BIZ: MSC UP AND THEN
20 RADIO TEACHER: That concludes our lesson for today. We just discussed
21 important terms and examples of forces. It is now time to apply what
22 we have discussed.
